“Calm down, honey.” My mom’s voice was hushed.

I tossed the paper down and got to my feet, dialing Blade again. My fingers shook as I listened to the phone ring. “Come on, Blade. Please answer.” When it went to voice mail again, I cursed under my breath and dialed again. “Pick up the damn phone, Blade.”

“Hello?”

When he answered, my legs almost gave out. “Blade?”

“Wyatt?” His husky voice held surprise.

I swallowed hard. “What the hell happened?”

There was an uneasy silence, and then Blade spoke softly. “The baby’s fine.”

Relief washed through me, but I was still concerned for him. “Did you get shot?” I held my breath.

“It’s just a scratch.”

I raked a hand through my hair, feeling frustrated. “And you didn’t think maybe you should call me and tell me you were okay?”

“I didn’t think you’d even know anything happened.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, really.” Now he sounded a little testy too.

I glanced at my mom, and I covered the mouthpiece. “He’s okay and the baby is fine.”

She pressed her hand to her chest and nodded. “Thank goodness.”

I wanted privacy, so I moved to the front door and stepped out onto the porch, shutting the door behind me. “The shooting was in the newspaper.”

He sighed. “Shit. Sorry. I didn’t think it would get back to you and your mom.”

“Well, it did, and I just about had a fucking heart attack.”

“Yeah?” He sounded surprised.

“Of course. Jesus, I haven’t heard a word from you since you left yesterday, and then I see there was a shooting.” I chuffed. “You should have called me when you got in to Austin. For all I knew you never even made it there.”

“Since when do we check in with each other?” Now he sounded defensive.

“Since you got pregnant,” I hissed.

“No. I’m not your property. Don’t think I’m going to call you every five minutes with updates.”

“I’m not talking about checking in with me constantly. But common courtesy would have been to at least text me and let me know you arrived in Texas safely.”

He exhaled. “I didn’t think about it.”

“Bullshit. I’ll bet you did, but you weren’t going to be the first one to call.”

He laughed gruffly, and he surprised me when he said, “Maybe.”

I shook my head. “Why are you like this?”

“I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, Wyatt. I wasn’t sure you wanted me to call you.”

“Are you nuts? Of course I do.” I closed my eyes. “Blade, I told you I want to take care of you. That means I like hearing from you.”
