“Then maybe I’ll say nice things more often.”

“That would be great.” I smiled, feeling light-hearted. “The house is depressingly quiet with you gone.”

He laughed.

I pinched the skin between my eyes. “Anyway… stay safe and come back soon.”

“I will. You be safe too.”

“You know it.” I hung up and tucked my phone into my pocket. It had been so nice hearing his voice and having him say he missed me. I was still unsettled that he could have been killed, but that was the nature of our job and I accepted that.

I went inside and found my mom filling the dishwasher. She straightened, her expression curious. “So what exactly happened?”

“A crazy Riley West fan pulled a gun, and Blade took him down. But in the process the bullet scraped him. He’s okay and the baby is fine.”

“Thank goodness.”

“It was good to hear his voice.” I hung my head and studied my shoes. “I miss him.”

“You’re starting to have real feelings for him, aren’t you?” She smiled. “I could tell it wasn’t just the baby you were worried about.”

I met her assessing gaze. “No. It wasn’t just the baby.”

“I’m glad. If you two can make it work, you could end up with a nice little family.”

“I didn’t think I wanted that.” It was surprising to think I would want that with Blade. “I haven’t ever felt like this. It’s pretty terrifying.”

“Not even with Sheena?”

“I loved her. I did.” I frowned. “But there’s a connection between me and Blade that’s completely different. It sounds corny, but it’s like he’s a part of me.”

She laughed. “I keep trying to tell you it’s because you’re fated mates, but you won’t listen.”

I grimaced. “It’s enough that I got a man pregnant. I can only swallow so much crazy lore.”

“Pretending it isn’t happening won’t make it go away.” She shook her head and closed the dishwasher. She faced me. “Is he still being stubborn about leaving for the mountains early?”

“Oh, yeah. There’s no way he’s leaving one second sooner.”

“I hope your child doesn’t get his stubborn streak.”

I laughed. “I’m no angel.”

“You don’t need to tell me that.” She rubbed my shoulder affectionately, and it softened her words.

“No, the only way Blade will leave for the mountains early is if we kidnap him and drag him there.” I grimaced. “And trust me, you do not want to get him that pissed off.”

“No. It wouldn’t be healthy for the baby.”

I snorted. “It wouldn’t be healthy for any of us.”

Chapter Seventeen

Blade

The concert venue was a security nightmare. There were too many entrances and exits and people who had to be backstage. I couldn’t control the situation at all, and it was nerve-wracking. Riley also complicated things when he had some old-school pals come hang out with him in his dressing room. There was really no way to keep the area secure with so many strangers coming and going.

Riley had taken the shooting earlier in stride. At first he’d been freaked-out, but then he’d calmed and settled back into his role of teenage heartthrob. He seemed happy and relaxed as he greeted various people from his past. Everyone appeared impressed and in awe of his fame. There were a few ex-girlfriends from high school who flirted with him, and some jock types who seemed overwhelmed and jealous of his obvious celebrity status.
