“He’s on his way.”

“What? I can’t give birth out here in the open.”

“We need to get the baby out if it comes to that. I don’t see that we have a choice.”

“I don’t know about this.”

His skin tone was gray, and that had me freaked-out. My heart banged against my chest. “Get behind me and put your arms around my neck.”

He grimaced. “My belly’s too fucking huge. I don’t know if I can hold on.”

“Just do it,” I ordered. He wound his arms around my neck, and I grabbed at his thighs and tried to pull him up higher. “Hang on.”

“I hope this won’t hurt the baby.” He sounded winded.

“If we don’t get you to the doctor, the baby doesn’t have a prayer.”

Blade was a tall, muscled guy, and with the added weight of the baby, it was a struggle to keep moving. But I took large strides, trying to get us farther down the mountain while I had any strength left. My muscles burned and my legs shook as I forced myself to just keep walking. I had to do everything in my power to keep him and the baby safe.

I skidded and slipped on the rocky terrain, my fingers digging into his thighs. His breath was hot against my neck, and he grunted with pain every few seconds. I looked ahead, praying that I’d see Dr. Peters coming toward us. By the time I did see movement up ahead, my legs were about to give out and Blade was groaning in obvious agony.

Dr. Peters had two people with him, Trina and someone I didn’t recognize. They carried tarps, bags, and a small machine. I fell to my knees as we reached them, and Blade let go of me and slumped onto the dirt. His eyes were icy blue, and he seemed uncertain of his surroundings.

“Get him on the tarp, now,” snapped Dr. Peters to his helpers. They obeyed and carefully laid Blade onto the blue plastic. They stripped his shirt off and pushed his pants to his knees. Then they attached electrodes to his chest and his sides. They switched on the little machine, and a soft beeping filled the area around us.

I knelt near Blade, my eyes stinging with tears as terror gripped me. I’d never been so scared in all my life. “Come on, Blade. Don’t you dare die on me.”

He threw his head back and clenched his teeth. “I’m not going anywhere.” His voice was raspy.

“That’s the spirit. You need to fight, Blade.” Dr. Peters gave Blade several injections on and around the baby bulge. Then he swabbed an area at the bottom of the bulge with a reddish-brown liquid. “I’m disinfecting the incision site.”

Blade groaned and squirmed. “Oh, God. Hurry. Please hurry.”

Dr. Peters addressed me. “If you’re squeamish about blood, you’re gonna want to look away.” He sounded breathless as he pressed a small scalpel to Blade’s abdomen. He made a long, quick incision and Blade hissed in pain. “Can you feel that? You should be numb.”

“Just get the baby out,” Blade snapped, perspiration rolling down his cheeks.

Trina mopped at the blood that gushed from the incision and, feeling light-headed, I had to look away. I didn’t really want to see the actual surgery, so I scooted up toward Blade’s head and stroked the hair off his sweaty forehead. “You’re doing great,” I whispered.

His fevered gaze held mine. “The baby’s going to be okay, right?” His voice broke on the last word.

My heart hurt gazing down at him. “Yes. The baby will be fine.” I had no idea if I was right or not, but he needed to hear something positive. I stroked his cheek and tried to smile. “You’re both going to be fine.”

He nodded and licked his dry lips. “Okay.” He winced and shivered. “This baby has fucking awful timing.”

I laughed gruffly. “I’ll never make you exercise again.”

A few minutes passed with Dr. Peters barking orders at Trina and the other guy. A hawk screeched somewhere above, and it hit me how surreal this moment was with the beep of the little machine and the smell of blood and iodine filling my nostrils as I sat in the dirt, holding Blade’s hand.

Blade turned his head, and he looked pale. “I wouldn’t change what happened between us,” he slurred.

“I’d change this part.” My voice was hard.

He frowned. “Yeah, but I mean I wouldn’t change us.” His eyes burned into mine. “I wouldn’t change falling in love with you.”

Tears burned my eyes. “This better not be a fucking farewell speech, Blade.”

He gave a weak smile. “I just want you to know I love you.”
