He moved closer to me. “I know you seem upset.”

“I’m so much more than just upset.” She sighed and her mouth drooped. “This should be an amazing occasion. But because it’s you two it’s awkward and only going to get worse.”

He squinted at her. “You keep talking in circles, dancing around what you want to say. I’d appreciate it if you would just come out and tell us what the big deal is.”

Her jaw tensed. “Yeah, you’re right. I need to tell you both what you’re about to face.” She swallowed hard and said softly, “Blade, you were sick because you’re pregnant with Wyatt’s child.”

His mouth fell open, and I stared at my mom as if she’d gone mad. The silence stretched for a few moments, and then Blade snapped his mouth closed and glared at her. “What the hell are you talking about?”

My mom seemed calmer now. She held out a placating hand. “I know this must be a huge shock to you.”

“No, my credit card being declined is a shock. This is insanity,” he growled. “I can’t possibly be pregnant.” He shot a look toward me. “You need to get your mom some psychiatric help.”

I didn’t care for his tone toward my mom, but I had to admit she sounded like a nut case. “Why would you say that, Mom?”

“It’s like I told you earlier, solar eclipse omegas can have babies. They were what saved our species when the sickness came to our females all those years ago.”

“Are you buying this bullshit?” He looked to me for backup.

She leaned toward him. “The solar eclipse omegas are the most fertile of all the wolves. Male or female. Insemination is followed by immediate vomiting and brightness in the eyes that some perceive as almost painful to look at.”

I shot him a nervous glance. “You were sick.” I swallowed. “And your eyes…”

“What about my eyes?” he growled.

“They were the weirdest color.” I shook my head. “But even so… the idea that you could be…” I didn’t finish my sentence. This was all too insane.

“You boys can pretend this isn’t happening. But it is. Soon you’re going to be unable to avoid the truth, Blade.”

“I’m a man,” he barked. “I can’t be pregnant.”

She narrowed her eyes. “You’re not just a man. You’re a solar eclipse omega, and you need to step up and embrace the gift you’ve been given.”

He shook his head and backed away toward the door. “Wyatt, get in the car. We’re leaving.”

I moved to my mom and hugged her. She held me tight and whispered, “I’m sorry, honey. This should be a joyous occasion.”

I had no idea what to say. I loved my mother, but her story about men having babies and Blade being pregnant with my child was just too over-the-top for any rational person to believe.

“I’ll call you later.” My voice was stiff.

“Okay,” she said. She looked like she wanted to cry.

Blade was already to the front door. He didn’t even look back at my mother as he stormed from the house to his car. His broad shoulders were squared, and he was almost running to his vehicle. I couldn’t really say I blamed him. My mom had been talking a lot of crazy shit just now.

I slid into the passenger seat, and his face was emotionless as he stared out the windshield. He started the car before I even had the door closed, and he screeched away from the curb.

“Look—” I began.

“Don’t,” he snapped. “We’re not talking about this.”

I sighed. “She means well.”

I snorted. “Is that right? Telling a man he’s pregnant is crazy, Wyatt. And what the fuck is wrong with you? Why did you tell her we fucked? Are you out of your mind?”

“I’m telling you she knew something was up the second I walked in her house.”

“And you just spilled your guts? Why didn’t you just deny it? She couldn’t prove a thing until you verified it for her.” He slammed his palm on the steering wheel. “Fuck. This is ridiculous.”
