“Photos don’t lie.”

I grabbed the paper. There was a grainy photo of Riley with his arm around Blade, and his mouth pressed to his face. From the angle I couldn’t tell if they were kissing on the mouth or not. But the body language was definitely intimate. My stomach dropped, and I felt sick looking at the picture.

“I know that working closely with people under high-stress situations can sometimes cause passions to run high. It wouldn’t be the first time someone crossed the line with their client. But how he could be so stupid as to actually let someone get his photograph while doing that is beyond me.”

I felt shocked and light-headed as I stared at the photo. “Could this be a fake?”

He shrugged. “Well, sure. But what are the odds?”

“Can I keep this?” I stood, my legs felt unsteady.

“Of course. Knowing how stubborn Blade is, you’ll need photographic evidence.”

I left his office in a daze. I needed to get home and talk to Blade about this right away. I’d known that Blade really liked Riley. He’d talked very highly of him when he got back. But he’d never hinted at anything romantic or sexual between them.

The drive to Blade’s felt twice as long as usual. It was after five, so I hoped he’d be home already. As I pulled into the driveway, I saw his car was there. My gut rolled and my heart pounded as I let myself into his house.

He was on the couch with his feet up and an ice pack on his head. He opened his eyes. “Hey.”

I swallowed and approached him. “Do you have a headache?”

“I always have a headache.” He rubbed his hand over his stomach, and he sighed.

The newspaper article burned a hole in my back pocket. I felt uneasy even bringing the thing with Riley up, but I couldn’t very well just pretend it hadn’t happened either. I tugged the paper from my pants, and I sat on the ottoman.

He squinted at me. “You okay?”

“I’m fine.”

He squinted. “Don’t lie. I can see something is bugging you.”

I shrugged. “I don’t want to make a big thing out of nothing, but I guess I do have some questions for you.”

“What about?”

I bit my lip and decided to just go for it. “Are you still in touch with Riley?”

He frowned. “Riley West?”

“Yeah.”

He shook his head and then winced. “Ouch.”

“You don’t still talk?”

“No. Why would we?”

“You have no contact with him at all?” I arched one brow.

“Isn’t that what I just said?” He pushed up on one elbow. “Since when are you so interested in Riley West?”

I pushed the newspaper photo onto his lap. He stared down at it, and he set the ice pack aside. “What the hell?” He squinted. “Who took that photo?”

My mouth hardened. “I’m not really that concerned with who took it. I’m kind of wondering why the fuck you’re kissing Riley West.”

His face flushed and he scowled. “He kissed me. It was just a peck.”

I’d been hoping all along the photo was a fake. But Blade wasn’t denying the kiss. In fact he didn’t seem that concerned about it at all. That didn’t exactly calm me or make me feel secure about what I’d thought we had together.
