I grabbed his hand, sweeping my thumb over his skin. “But then it can be amazing too.”

“Definitely.”

I smiled down at the baby. “What should we call her?”

“If we don’t let Emily help pick her name, we will never hear the end of it.”

“Very true. Once I’m out of the hospital, we can Facetime her and let her see the baby.” I couldn’t stop staring at my daughter. It was mesmerizing noticing all the little details of her: her long dark lashes and the tiny fingernails.

“Ah. Yes. Facetime. Good idea. Trina said you should be released tomorrow morning.” He kissed my forehead, his eyes dark with affection. “I’m so happy you’re okay.”

“Me too.”

“I never thought I’d be one of those sappy alphas. But I really am when it comes to you, Pierce. This new me is all your fault.”

“I like the transformation.”

“I think from the first moment I met you, I fell for you.”

I snorted. “Bullshit.”

“What?” He laughed.

“You barely noticed me when you first met me. That was part of what annoyed me. You seemed to dismiss me.” Meeting him for the first time seemed like a million years ago.

“I noticed you. I couldn’t stop thinking about you all that night and the next day.”

“Really?” I smiled. “Tell me more.”

“Even though I found you annoying, you made an impression. When you came to my house to help me with Emily, I was embarrassed because I couldn’t stop checking you out. You made me so nervous.”

I grinned. “Yeah, you were being a real ninnyhammer.”

He grimaced. “I’m never going to live that name down, am I?”

“It rolls off the tongue nicely. I can definitely see it on a T-shirt or a hat.”

“I’d forgotten how cruel you can be.”

I chuckled, and the baby made a little snoring sound. I glanced down and she was sound asleep, still sucking on the bottle. “Oh, wow. She’s an angel.”

He sighed. “She really is. I’m positive I saw little wing buds.”

I watched him under my brow, loving his gentle expression as he gazed at our new baby. “I feel like my life is just starting,” I said quietly.

He slid his gaze to mine. “Same.”

“When we first met, I thought I needed to keep you at arm’s length because you were straight and an alpha. God, I was so wrong.”

“I had to adjust my way of thinking too. Obviously, having only been with women. But to be honest, I don’t think loving you was a choice. It was inevitable the moment I met you.”

My chest warmed at his husky words. “I know what you mean.”

“So you didn’t just stick around so I’d buy you that expensive dinner?” He grinned.

I widened my eyes. “I’d forgotten all about that. Yes, you do owe me a fancy dinner. But that’s not why I stayed.”

“I’ll buy you all the dinners you want. Happily.”
