Frowning he said, “Well, save your money and you’ll get there.”

“Sure.”Me and my baby will be a real hit on the beaches of Malibu.I sighed and rubbed my belly.

He seemed to notice. “Your stomach bothering you?”

My face warmed, and I pulled my hand away quickly. “Nope.“

He narrowed his eyes as if he didn’t believe me. But he changed the subject. “Do you work tonight?”

“Yeah. At four.”

“I’ll give you a ride.”

I stiffened. “No. I can take a bus.”

“The buses aren’t running in this weather.”

“Then I can walk.”

He scowled, his eyes dark. “Why would you do that when I can drive you?”

“Because I’m not your problem, Graham. You’ve done enough already.”

He stood as if irked, scraping back his chair. He carried his plate to the sink, rinsed it, and then started cleaning up the rest of the kitchen. I got up and took my dish to the sink. I wasn’t sure why, but I didn’t like that he seemed annoyed with me.

I cleared my throat. “I don’t want you to think I’m taking advantage.”

He was wiping the stove, and he stopped. Glancing at me, he said, “How? You haven’t asked for anything. I’ve offered.”

“But if you keep helping me, eventually you’re going to feel like I’ve used you.”

“I don’t see that happening.”

I crossed my arms. “No one just gives and gives without feeling used, or at the very least wanting something in return.”

He narrowed his eyes and gave a humorless laugh. “Oh, I get it.”

“What?”

“It just occurred to me what the real problem is.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

He set the sponge down and said, “You don’t want to take too much from me because you think that means I’ll think you owe me.”

Heat filled my cheeks. “I didn’t say that.”

“You kind of did. You implied no one gives without wanting something back.”

I lifted my chin. “Well, okay, fine. Isn’t that true?”

He moved closer, the deep brown of his eyes making my pulse spike. “What do you think I want from you, Sam?” His voice was deep, and it sent pleasant shivers down my spine.

I swallowed, confused by how he made me feel. “I… I have no idea.”

“Yeah you do,” he said softly.

“I’m not wrong. People do things expecting to be paid back.” My tone was stubborn. “Especially alphas.”
