“I’m not doing that,” I growled. The last week and a half with Graham had practically been the best of my life. He’d been so kind and generous, giving me a place to stay and a ride to work every day. We got along really well, and there was no way in hell I’d jeopardize that by asking him for money. Especially for an asshole like Tim.

Tim curled his lip, studying me. “If I was a betting man, I’d say you haven’t told him about your little baby in the oven problem.”

My face heated at his threatening tone.

He smirked. “I’m right, aren’t I? I can see the fear in your eyes. Afraid he won’t want you anymore when he finds out you’re carrying another alpha’s baby?”

“He’s not my boyfriend. We don’t have that kind of relationship.”

He laughed harshly. “Liar.”

“It’s the truth.”

He ran his gaze over my body. “No way he isn’t interested in you sexually. You’re a good looking man, Sam.”

I shivered, repulsed that I’d ever even let him touch me in the past. “I’m not asking him for money.”

His mouth hardened. “Don’t make me fuck up your little love connection.”

Lifting my chin, I snapped, “How about I call the cops, and tell them the loser who didn’t pay his bill over at the Wagon Train Motel is back in town?”

He took a step back, shifting uneasily. “You wouldn’t dare. They’d probably arrest you too.”

“Do you want to take that chance?” I had no idea if he was right or not. I only knew I wanted him to go away. He was bad news, and I didn’t want him anywhere near me, Graham or my baby.

He grabbed my arm, and I stiffened. “You used to be a lot nicer,” he hissed.

“Back at you.”

Letting go of me, he grumbled. “How the hell am I supposed to get to California, Sam?”

I exhaled with disgust, grabbing my wallet from my back pocket. I opened it and pulled out what was in it. “I only have fifty bucks on me.”

His eyes lit, and he went to grab the bills, but I snatched them away. “Hey,” he grumbled.

“This is all you’re going to get from me. Do you understand? Don’t you dare come back, or I will try to get you arrested. All it takes is an anonymous phone call to the cops. I know your license plate number and you never go far without a little weed in your pocket. I’m sure you wouldn’t want them to find that.”

He smirked. “Well, well. Sammy grew some balls.”

My pulse beat swiftly as I held his gaze. “I’m saying I don’t ever want to see you again. Are you grasping that?”

“Fine.” He grabbed the cash. Then he surprised me by yanking me in for a kiss.

I squirmed, and pushed him off of me, breathing hard. I didn’t want to make a scene, but I wiped my mouth in disgust, and growled, “Go away.”

He grinned and moved to the door. “Have a nice life, Sam.”

It took all my self-control not to tell him to fuck off. “Good riddance, Tim.”

By the time he left, my break was over. As I worked my shift, I felt rattled after my little run in with my ex. I reassured myself he’d leave town. There would be no real point in trying to figure out a way to tell Graham about my pregnancy. He would have to know that was a stupid move that wouldn’t get him any more money. But Tim could be a vindictive jerk sometimes, and I was concerned he’d just want to hurt me.

When I finally clocked out, I felt exhausted and nauseous. Graham came inside the diner to get me, and I smiled stiffly at him, and said goodbye to Patty. The air outside was freezing, and once inside the cab of his truck, I huddled down, my teeth chattering. He started the engine and turned on the heater.

“Everything okay?” he asked, pulling onto the highway.

“Of course.”

There was Christmas music playing from the CD player, and he turned it down. “You know, you can talk to me, Sam.”
