He shrugged. “I kind of ran out of money.”

Of course it would be about money.

“Maybe you should get a fucking job.”

“Baby.” He sighed. “Why are you so angry?”

I bugged my eyes, and it took everything in me not to toss the nearest napkin dispenser at his head. “Are you serious? I got kicked out of the motel in the middle of a snow storm. I had no money and no transportation of any kind. I could have starved to death for all you knew.”

“It’s only been two weeks.” He huffed. “People don’t starve to death that fast.”

“It was snowing. I could have frozen to death.”

“You’re so dramatic.”

“And you’re unbelievable.” I hardened my jaw.

He sighed. “I need a loan. Not a big loan, just a small one.”

“You must be joking.”

“I’m not.”

“Every penny I have is going to savings for when the baby comes,” I said quietly, looking around nervously.

“It’s my baby too.”

I laughed. “Yes. So how about you loanmesome money then?”

Scowling, he leaned toward me. “Would I be asking for money if I had any? Fucking radiator went out on me a town over. It cleaned me out.”

“So you thought you’d come running back to me?”

“I’m not here to stay.”

“Good. Go. The sooner the better.”

“Just loan me some fucking money. You want me gone, right?”

“What makes you think I have money? I’m not exactly making bank here.” I frowned. “I thought you’d be to California by now.”

“Not after my radiator blew up.” He lifted the lid on a cake plate next to us and grabbed a cookie. He replaced the lid clumsily, and bit into the baked good.

“What are you doing? Those aren’t free.” I bristled with irritation.

“Don’t you get free food here?” He spoke with his mouth full of cookie.

“I get one free meal. Emphasis onI.”

He crunched on his cookie, staring at me. Once he swallowed, he said, “That alpha you’re with. He looks like he probably has money. He has a nice big house.”

“You’ve been spying on me?”

He shrugged. “Well, you are my omega.”

I shook my head. “No. No that’s bullshit. I’m nobody’s omega.”

“Little independent, Sam. Always pushing everyone away.” He sighed. “Look, how about you ask your new boyfriend for a little money, and then I’ll leave town, and we can all be happy?”
