Once he was gone, Dylan seemed even more uptight than usual. He said nothing and just continued to shred chicken with his back to me. I studied the back of his auburn head, wondering what the best way was to connect to the prickly little bastard. With Tucker gone, this was the perfect time to try and bond more with him.
I cleared my throat. “So… what do you like to do in your free time?”
He glanced at me as if surprised I was addressing him. “Me?”
I laughed. “Yeah. You.”
He shifted uneasily. “I work a lot.”
“What do you do?”
He took so long to answer, I thought he wasn’t going to. But then he said, “I’m a labor delivery nurse.”
I lifted my brows in surprise. “Really? You deliver babies?”
“Yes.”
He looked like he didn’t want to keep talking, but I didn’t care. I had to make some progress or I’d never get anything out of him. “Do you like it?”
He hesitated. “Yes. Mostly.”
“What don’t you like about it?”
A gleam of suspicion suddenly appeared in his eyes. “Why do you care?”
“Why?” I asked, taken aback.
“Yeah. Why do you care about my life?”
Irritation nipped at me, but I swallowed my angry retort. “I’m making conversation, Dylan. It’s what people do.”
“You’re asking a lot of questions.”
“How else do I get to know you?” I hoped I sounded reasonable. It wasn’t easy stomping down my irritation. I never had to work this hard to get someone to like me. His dislike of me was puzzling, especially since I’d been nothing but kind.
He set the piece of chicken he held down and faced me. “But that’s just it. Why are you trying to get to know me?”
“Why not get to know you?”
Running his gaze over me, he said, “It doesn’t take a genius to see we’re very different from each other. You obviously have money. I don’t.”
“So? I like all kinds of omegas.”
“Is that right?”
“I liked Tucker’s idea of spending time outside of the class. We should definitely do that.”
He narrowed his eyes. “You’re not hitting on me, right?”
“What?” I sputtered. “Hitting on you?” I laughed gruffly. “No. I’m not hitting on you. I… I date women.”
“Oh.”
What was that in his expression? Relief? Disappointment? Both? I couldn’t tell. “I’m simply trying to get to know you because we’re in a class together. My motives aren’t salacious.” I was flustered he’d thought I was hitting on him. Had I been giving off some sort of lecherous vibe I wasn’t aware of?
He watched me as if he wasn’t sure he believed me. I kind of had to admire his mistrustful instincts. Iwassimply trying to get information about the compound and had no real interest in his life. Maybe he could sense that. Or, perhaps I wasn’t as good at charming omegas as I’d thought I was.
“I don’t see why a guy like you would be here in Yellow Springs.” He continued to watch me with that piercing gaze of his. “You say you’re here for work, but you never talk about your work.”
