“If this is true, that’s pretty fucking mind-blowing.” Gabriele nodded.

“It is true.” Dylan held my gaze. “Like I said before, I never asked for this.”

“But why would you exist?” I frowned. “We have female omegas already to bear our offspring.”

Charles answered first. “Long ago the females of our kind got sick, and there were no live births. We faced extinction, but then the solar eclipse omegas appeared. They saved our species.”

I studied Dylan. He didn’t look crazy. He looked angry. Hurt. I knew there were things in the world beyond my comprehension—was this one of those things? “This is difficult to accept.”

“I know.” Dylan’s mouth drooped. “That’s why I was afraid to tell you. I knew you wouldn’t believe me.”

“I want to believe you,” I said softly.

“Do you?”

“My mind tells me this isn’t possible, but my heart says to trust you.” I held his worried gaze.

“Which will you listen to?” he asked.

I gave a husky laugh. “When it comes to you, my heart always seems to win out.”

He looked on the verge of tears, but he pressed his lips together as if refusing to give in to his emotions. “I’m going home. I’m tired and I’ve said all I can say. If you don’t believe me, I can’t change that.”

“I’m coming too.” I stood.

He gave me a wary look, but he didn’t argue.

I nodded a good night to Gabriele and trailed Dylan out into the cool evening. Dylan had nothing to say to me, and I wasn’t sure what to say to him either. I knew we needed to talk, but I didn’t know where to begin. When we got to his house, once inside, he started to go to his room. Instinctively, I knew that would be a mistake. We needed to iron this out now and not let the hurt feelings fester. I didn’t want to lose him.

“Dylan, wait.”

He stopped and glanced at me over his shoulder.

“We need to talk.”

“I’m tired.”

“Then we can talk in bed.”

He narrowed his eyes. “You’re not sleeping in my room.”

“Yeah. I am.”

Anger sent a flush across his cheeks. “Says who?”

“I’m your alpha. I sleep where you sleep.”

He chuffed. “Now you’re my alpha?”

“We’re fated mates. I don’t have much choice, do I?”

“You suddenly believe in fated mates?”

“I believe in you. I believe in my love for you.”

He chewed his bottom lip, looking uneasy. “I don’t want you around if you’re going to make me feel bad. This pregnancy will be tough enough without that.”

I winced. “I don’t want to be the thing that upsets you. I want to be your comfort.”
