“I have to admit, I find the compound intriguing,” I said.
He glanced at me. “Is that right?”
“Yeah. Probably because everyone is so secretive about the place.”
“It’s a special place, but the less people know the better.”
That was an interesting statement. “Is it like an actual city in there?”
He hesitated, and then he said, “It’s more like a very large neighborhood. Everybody knows everybody.”
“Sounds nice.”
“It is.” His tone was emotionless. “There are a ton of happy couples.”
I laughed. “You don’t sound thrilled.”
He gave a grudging smile over his shoulder. “It’s a wonderful place, but when it comes to happiness, sometimes it’s not just about where you live.”
I was intrigued by his statement. “What do you mean?”
He shook his head. “Never mind. It’s not important.”
I sighed. “You know, Dylan, you don’t have to be so guarded with me. I’d like us to be friends.” I hoped I sounded sincere. Approachable.
His expression was enigmatic, and for a split second he seemed to soften. Then his mouth tightened, and he went back to his chore. “We should focus on this recipe. It’s hard to concentrate when I’m talking.”
After that comment, I couldn’t get anything out of him but grunts. I’d felt like we were making progress, but he was closed off again. He was a tough nut, that was for sure. If I was going to crack his shell, it wasn’t going to be easy. If he barely talked to me in class, and he refused to socialize with me and Tucker outside of class, I was at a loss as how to connect to him. I wasn’t ready to give up though. He was the one person I’d met in town who worked at the compound. I was determined to figure out a way to get inside that damn fortress and solve the mystery of what had happened to Dad.
Chapter Five
Dylan
I was unsettled to find myself thinking about Lex during the week. He was different from most alphas I’d known, and he was a bit of a mystery. There was no denying I was physically attracted to him. Not that that really mattered. I definitely wasn’t in the market for an alpha, and he’d admitted he was straight. But his confidence did turn me on. I didn’t want to find him attractive, but it was hard not to. He was one of the most beautiful alphas I’d ever seen. Meeting him had awakened a sexual yearning I’d worked hard to suppress. The moment I’d seen him and caught his scent, I’d felt drawn to him physically. It was unsettling to say the least.
I wiped the sweat from my brow and focused on the paperwork in front of me. Maybe Dr. Peters had a point about how unnatural it was for an omega to keep themselves from all personal interaction. Omegas were social by nature. Maybe because being alone went against our sole purpose for existing. But while I could grudgingly admit I was sexually attracted to Lex, I had zero interest in forming any actual kind of relationship with him or any other alpha. But judging by the warmth of my cock at the thought of Lex, maybe it was time I sought out at least some physical release.
I blew out a shaky breath at the idea of pursuing something physical with someone in town. There weren’t really any available alphas at the compound. The only reason alphas were here usually was to accompany their solar eclipse omega. That meant if I wanted to find someone to sleep with, they would have to be in town. That also meant I’d have to put myself out there if I was going to hook up with anyone. I hated the very idea of that, but meeting Lex had reminded me that I had sexual needs.
I couldn’t help but blame Dr. Peters for the reawakening of my libido. If he’d never insisted I go into town, I’d never have met Lex. These lusty thoughts only started when I ran into him. I’d been perfectly happy being celibate up to that point. Now, my need was a scratch that definitely needed itching. I’d been distracted enough before, but now I was twice as muddled because thoughts of sex occupied my mindalongwith my grief.
The phone rang beside me, and I jumped. “Hello?”
“This is Sam from Yellow Springs Medical Company. How are you today?”
“Fine.” I tapped my pencil on the desk. “What can I do for you?”
“We have your speculum and amniotic hook order. Usually we’d deliver it, but our truck is broken down. I’m sorry, but we won’t be able to make it up the mountain for a few days.”
I frowned, knowing we were low on those items at the clinic. “Do you want us to come and get them?”
“Well, if you need them, I think you’ll have to. We’re hoping the truck will be fixed in a few days, but who the heck knows with trucks, right?” He laughed gruffly.
I glanced at my watch. It was almost five, and I’d be off soon. “How late are you open?”
“Six.”
I frowned. “I guess I can come to town and get the stuff before then.”
