“Awesome. I’ll even throw in a case of forceps, since I feel bad about this.”

“Oh, well, that’s kind of you.”

“We want to keep your business.”

I stood. “I’ll be there in about a half hour.”

“Sounds good.” He hung up.

He hadn’t given me the address of his business, so I had to look it up. Grumbling, I texted Dr. Peters to let him know where I was going, and that I was borrowing the clinic’s van. I left the compound feeling irritable. As I drove into town, it occurred to me that there was no rush to get back to the compound. If I was serious about trying to hook up with someone, maybe this was the perfect time. My dick throbbed at the thought of that, even as my gut churned. I was nervous about letting an alpha touch me, but I needed relief. Resisting my urges was becoming painful, and I craved the touch of another man’s hands on my body. Jerking off was fine up to a point, but there was nothing like the feeling of a thick cock buried deep inside me. I wanted that rush of endorphins that real sex gave me.

Dr. Peters had wanted me to join singles groups so that I could meet someone and actually have a relationship. But I didn’t want that. Lust was something I could deal with without forming any sort of romantic connection. Whether Dr. Peters thought I should have an alpha or not was a moot point. I had no desire for that. He couldn’t force me to date or take an alpha. The only reason I was considering sleeping with someone was becauseIwanted that. Or at least, I thought maybe I did. I decided I’d play it by ear once I was in town.

The road into town was steep and winding. I had the window rolled down, and I inhaled the tangy scent of spruce pines. The sun felt nice on my shoulder, and the sky was cloudless and deep azure. It was beautiful up in the hills. I enjoyed living away from the bustle of the city. I hoped there never came a time when Dr. Peters asked me to leave the compound. I couldn’t imagine where I’d go, and even though I mostly isolated myself from the others at the compound, I did like the people I worked with. They were kind and truly seemed to care about the solar eclipse omegas they helped.

When I arrived in town, I squinted at the addresses on the buildings, looking for the Yellow Springs Medical Company. I eventually found the large whitewashed building on the south side of town. When I pulled through the big gates and into the cramped parking lot, an alpha came out of the building. He was probably in his fifties with gray eyes and a dusting of silver at his temples.

“You must be from the compound. I’m Sam.” He held out his hand, and we shook.

I shielded my eyes against the late-afternoon sun. “Nice to meet you. I’m Dylan.”

“Again, I’m really sorry about this. That truck has been giving us lots of trouble lately. Probably time to buy a new one, but they’re expensive, so the boss has been putting it off.”

“It’s fine. Things happen.” I opened the back of the van as I spoke.

“Appreciate you being so understanding.” He smiled and then went back inside the building. He opened the big double doors and began wheeling boxes to the van. Once he had them stacked beside the vehicle, he started loading cases into the back of my van.

I helped him toss some cases into the van, trying to decide if I actually wanted to stop at a bar and have a drink or not. I was definitely tempted, and my pulse raced at the idea of actually having sex. It had been so long—would I even remember what the hell to do? I studied Sam out of the corner of my eye. He had a nice calm energy about him. His hands were calloused and tanned, and he had an easy smile. It would be nice if I could find someone like him to fuck. He didn’t seem threatening, and sometimes older alphas were excellent lovers.

Once all the boxes were in the van, Sam brushed his palms off on his jeans and then shook my hand once more. His grip was warm and firm. “Thanks again for coming into town. You saved my ass. The boss was about ready to tie these cases to my back and make me hump them up the mountain myself.”

“It’s not your fault the truck broke down.”

He smiled. “Since when does that ever matter to the boss, right?”

My pulse bumped at his warm smile. “That’s the truth.”

“But, they have all the power, so what can we do?” He sighed.

“Good point.” I hesitated but then forced myself to speak. “Uh… I was thinking about maybe grabbing a beer while I was in town. Know any good places?” I’d barely left the compound the six months I’d been there, so I was clueless about what Yellow Springs had to offer.

He hesitated. “Oh, well, there are a few good ones. You looking for cheap booze or atmosphere?”

I grimaced at my jeans and rumpled T-shirt. “Nothing fancy, that’s for sure.”

He nodded. “Well, there’s the Purple Pooch a few doors down. It’s kind of a dive, but the beer is cheap and ice-cold.”

“Sounds perfect.” I laughed nervously. I was trying to drum up the courage to ask him if he’d care to join me, when I noticed he had a golden band on his ring finger.

Damn.

“There’s also Leo’s about a half mile away. It’s a nicer clientele but pricier.” He gave me a good-natured smile.

I pushed down my disappointment that he was obviously taken and moved to the van. “Thanks. Maybe I’ll give the Purple Pooch a try. The name is intriguing.”

He chuckled and headed toward the building. “Thanks again for being so cool about everything.”

I climbed in the van. “No problem.” I started the engine and backed out of the parking lot. It would have been nice to have someone like Sam with me when I went to the Purple Pooch. Walking into a bar alone was always daunting, and I was nervous as hell and still uncertain I wanted to do this. I decided I’d go to the Purple Pooch and just play it by ear. I’d have a drink and see if anyone caught my eye. If not, I’d just leave; no harm done.
