“I gave him some circles. What’s the big deal?”

“Jesus. What part of keep a low profile did you not grasp?” Lex gave a snort of disgust, and he grabbed me under my arms. With a grunt he pulled me to my feet, and I leaned on Lex in a haze of confusion.

While it seemed Lex might be helping me, he also seemed really annoyed. I could feel impatience radiating off him in waves. The two men bickered as I clung to Lex, trying not to black out. I had no idea what they said, but at one point I was dragged to a black car. The door opened, and I was dumped, none too gently, into the back seat.

I wasn’t sure whose car I was in, but I prayed it wasn’t Hank’s. I wanted to ask what was happening, but my throat was so dry, I couldn’t speak. I heard the engine start, and I closed my eyes as everything went black.

Lex

“What the fuck were you thinking?” I yelled at Hank.

Hank wilted under my anger and dropped his gaze. “What’s the big deal?”

“What’s the big deal?” I asked, my voice raising with incredulity. “You roofied the one person in town who could get me into that fucking compound!”

“He’s out of it. He has no idea what’s happening.” He gestured to the bathroom, where we’d dumped Dylan in the tub.

“He could wake up any second.”

“He won’t. He’ll be out a while.” Hank smirked.

I narrowed my eyes. “Seriously, Hank. What was your plan? You were going to rape the kid, and then what? Was I supposed to try and befriend him after that? He’d be in the hospital or talking to the cops, and they’d all be looking for you.”

“Okay, maybe I didn’t think it through.”

“Ya think?”

Hank shrugged. “You didn’t hear how snooty he was. He pissed me off.”

I laughed harshly. “I didn’t hear how snooty he was? Are you serious? I’ve put up with his attitude for weeks. But you know what I didn’t do, Hank? I didn’t drug him and try to rape him.”

He winced. “Why are you so protective of him? It’s not like I’ve never done this kind of shit before. Your dad didn’t care.”

I widened my eyes. “My dad didn’t care if you raped people?” I felt sick to my stomach. “I don’t believe you.”

“You don’t have to believe me. So long as I did what he wanted, he didn’t care what I did in my spare time.”

I had a bad taste in my mouth as I watched him. Was that true? Dad hadn’t cared if this Neanderthal sexually assaulted people? How was that possible?

Gabriele came through the door, looking rattled. “Shit. What are we going to do with that kid?”

“I don’t know yet,” I snapped.

“If he wakes up, we’re in even deeper shit.” Gabriele scowled. “Why did you bring him here?”

“I couldn’t just leave him unconscious in the parking lot.” I raked a shaky hand through my hair, looking around the hotel suite. “Don’t worry. Nobody saw us bring him up here.”

“So now what do we do with him?” Gabriele asked breathlessly. “If he wakes up, he might start yelling.”

“Maybe we can find his car and dump him in it,” Hank said. “What kind of car does he drive?”

I gave him an irritable look. “I don’t know. Some kind of white van.”

“There can’t be that many of those in the parking lot of the Purple Pooch.” Hank met my gaze, dropping his after a few seconds. “Look, I fucked up. But we can still salvage this.”

“What if he recognized my voice?” I asked angrily. “All those weeks of kissing his ass and trying to get him to trust me will mean nothing.”
