“Really?” I bugged my eyes, shocked I’d been out that long.

“You needed it.”

“I guess.” I watched the crack of light under the door, noticing moving shadows now and then, as if someone was walking past. Did our captors listen at the door? A shiver ran down my spine. “I wish I knew what they wanted.”

“Who knows the mind of a criminal?”

“Another criminal?”

He grunted a response.

“Do you think we’ll get out of this alive?” I hated that my voice wobbled, but I was terrified we both might die. That fear had rolled around in my head for days, constantly keeping me on edge.

“Yes.” He sounded confident.

I rested my arms on the edge of the tub. “I wish I had your certainty.”

“There’s no reason to hurt us.”

I frowned. “There’s no reason to grab us in the first place other than to hurt us.”

“Well, you may have a point there.”

“God.” I shivered. “I don’t want to think of what that Hank guy wanted to do to me. Or… still might do to me.”

“No. I won’t let him.” He surprised me when he put his hand on mine. His skin was firm and warm, and I instantly felt better. I knew that was because he was an alpha. It was difficult not to respond to his calming touch. Although, only days ago I hadn’t found it hard to resist him at all. Things had changed the minute he walked into my nightmare.

I inhaled his familiar clean scent, wanting to invite him into the tub with me. It would have been so nice to have him hold me. Not in a sexual way, but in a comforting way. I’d been so scared before he came, I’d felt hopeless. I’d wanted to be strong, but being alone for days had eaten away at my resolve. Of course, I didn’t bother asking him to join me in the tub. He’d feel awkward doing that. He was straight, and most straight guys didn’t hug each other for comfort.

“Do they check on you during the night?” he asked.

“Not usually.”

“But they bring food?”

“Yes.”

“Is it at least good food? They didn’t bother feeding me.”

“I think it’s fast food? I’ve been so out of it, I’m not sure what they offered me.”

“Don’t suppose they offered you an espresso?” he asked wryly.

“Not that I recall.” I grimaced. “I didn’t dare put in a special order.”

He laughed. “No. I wouldn’t think so.” He removed his hand from mine.

I studied his dark silhouette. “You’re taking this situation well.”

“What choice do I have?”

“You’re an alpha. Shouldn’t you try and kick the door down?” I was mostly kidding, but I was a bit surprised at how serene he appeared.

“I’d rather not get shot.”

My stomach dropped. “Do they have guns?”

He hesitated. “I definitely saw guns.”
