I was distracted from staring when there was a rattling of the doorknob, and Lex and I locked eyes.
“Get away from the door,” a male voice commanded from the other side of the door. “Stand in the tub.”
We backed away and did as instructed. I was breathless with fear because maybe they were feeding us, and maybe they were going to murder us. I had no idea which. The door swung slowly open, and the same alpha with the ski mask who’d fed me the last two days entered, holding a tray with two fast-food breakfast sandwiches and two small paper coffee cups.
The guy watched us warily, his eyes glittering from behind the ski mask. I could feel Lex’s tension beside me and really hoped he didn’t do anything stupid. I didn’t want him to get hurt, and I wasn’t confident in my ability to back him up, given my exhausted state.
The guy set the cups on the sink counter and tossed the sandwiches at us. Lex caught them both with one hand, which was good because I was so out of it, they probably would have smacked me in the face.
“Breakfast is served,” the guy said snidely, and then he backed out of the small room, closing the door with a bang.
I slumped with relief and shook my head when Lex tried to hand me one of the sandwiches.
“Dylan, you need to eat.” He frowned.
“I can’t.” I rubbed my empty stomach.
He ignored me and unwrapped one of the sandwiches. The enticing scent of warm English muffin, Canadian bacon, and butter filled my nose. “Come on. Just take a few bites.” He held the sandwich to my lips.
I turned my head. “You eat it.”
“Dylan.” His voice was stern.
Something inside of me responded to his alpha energy, and I took the sandwich from him. Our fingers brushed, but he didn’t seem to notice. I did though, and as tingles spiraled through my hand, I turned away. I definitely didn’t want him to pick up on the fact he affected me physically. That would be embarrassing.
He peeled the wrapper off the other sandwich and bit into it with gusto. Kidnapping didn’t seem to dampen his appetite any. When he glanced up and noticed I hadn’t started eating, he pulled his dark brows together. “Eat.”
I sighed and forced myself to bite into the sandwich. It was still warm, and it tasted delicious. I took another bite, suddenly feeling ravenous. He watched me with a little smile hovering on his lips. As hungry as I was, I couldn’t make it past four bites. When I held the rest of the food out to him, he frowned, looking disappointed. But he took it.
“No point in wasting it. Not if you want it,” I said, giving him a conciliatory look.
“You need food.”
I grabbed my coffee and sat on the edge of the tub. “I had food.”
“That wouldn’t satiate a bird.”
I shrugged and dropped my gaze to the floor as I sipped my coffee. After a few minutes, he finished off my sandwich too. I tried not to watch him eat my leftovers. There was something oddly sensual about him putting his mouth where mine had been, and the last thing I needed was to get some random hard-on.
Once the food and coffee was consumed, we tossed the cups and wrappers in the trash. Lex moved to the door, and he pressed his ear against the wood.
“What are you doing?” I whispered.
“Trying to hear what they’re talking about.” He adjusted his position and kept listening. “It sounds like they’re going out,” he said softly.
“Really?” I perked up.
He nodded and continued to eavesdrop. “One of them wants to go drink and play pool, and the other guy doesn’t want him to do that.”
“Seriously?”
“Yes.”
“I wish they’d tell us why we’re here instead of playing pool.”
“Me too.” He kept listening. “I think I heard the door.”
“Do you think they’re gone?” My heart pounded as I stood and approached him.
