I raised my brows. “So then youareon his side.”

He frowned. “No. But I do trust him. Don’t you?”

I blew out an impatient breath. “I trust Lex.”

“Even though you don’t know him?” He rubbed his jaw, looking uneasy. “I mean, he seems like a charming guy, but I do get the feeling he’s hiding something.”

“Would you have felt that way though if Charles hadn’t put that in your head? I don’t think so.” I moved away and grabbed a carton of beef stock from the pantry. “Charles has his mind made up.”

He moved closer. “Listen, all I’m saying is, be careful. Maybe Charles is blinded by suspicion, but you’re blinded too because you like Lex. Keep your eyes open.”

“My eyes are wide open,” I muttered, pouring the stock into the pot.

“I hope so.”

I shook my head and tossed the empty beef stock carton into the trash. “You’re the one who wanted me to go out and meet someone.”

He pulled his brows together. “Are you and Lex romantically involved?”

“No.” I winced. “I just mean, I’m made a connection with someone, and you’re still not happy.”

He grimaced and seemed to choose his words carefully. “I’m glad you like Lex. I’m happy you seem to really admire him. All I want is for you to be careful until we know more about him.”

“I know that he’s brave and he helped me. That’s enough for now.” Dr. Peters’s overprotectiveness was annoying. He knew nothing about Lex, but I could sense his uneasiness at the very idea of me having feelings toward the other alpha. It was none of his business. That went for Charles too. They needed to butt out.

“Just take it slowly.”

“Message received,” I growled.

His phone rang, and he answered it. I knew from the uptight expression he got that it was Charles. He went into the living room, and he spoke softly for a few minutes. Then he returned. “That was Charles.”

“I figured.” I scowled. “What did you tell him?”

“I told him that I believed Lex actually did have a touch of the flu, and that he could do with another day’s rest.”

I widened my eyes. “What?”

“I said Lex needed an extra day to recuperate before Charles interviews him.”

I was so surprised, I had no idea what to say. I stared at him, speechless.

He smiled. “Lex truly does seem worn-out, and I have no doubt Charles will be hard on him. He deserves to be at his best when he faces Charles.”

My heart squeezed with affection for my boss. “Thank you. I… I don’t know what to say.”

He shrugged. “What’s the difference if he interviews him tomorrow or the next day? The answers won’t change.”

“Wow. Thank you, Dr. Peters.”

He smiled kindly. “I expect you bright and early on Wednesday.” He moved toward the front door.

“Absolutely. I’ll be there.” I followed him, feeling a bit guilty he’d gotten the brunt of my frustrations with Charles.

“Good.” He opened the door and then paused. “Lex knows not to wander around, right? Charles isn’t playing games.”

My stomach tensed. “Yes. He knows. Charles made sure he knew.”

“Okay, good.” He stepped out onto the porch. “I hope you’re not mad at me.”
