“I can imagine.”

He sighed. “Without that hanging over my head, maybe I can actually sleep tonight.”

“I hope so. Nothing heals you like sleep.” I took the tray from his lap and put it on the nightstand. Then I settled back in my chair. “Um… I was thinking… I feel like I don’t know anything about you.”

His expression changed immediately, and his smile faded. “Does Charles want you to pump me for info?”

I widened my eyes. “What? No.”

“You sure?” He definitely looked guarded now.

“Lex, I just want to know more about you.”

A sheepish expression moved across his features. “Sorry. Charles has me paranoid.”

“I don’t work for him. I’m simply curious about you.”

He sighed. “Okay.”

I relaxed slightly. “Let’s start with the name of the company you work for.” I laughed. “I still have no idea.”

“Heaton Industries,” he said immediately, as if he’d been waiting for the question.

“I think I might have heard of them.”

“You probably have. They’re definitely making a big push for new business this year.”

“Yes, I’m sure I’ve seen their ads.”

He nodded but didn’t speak.

“I’ll steer Dr. Peters toward them.” I smiled. “Providing your prices are good.”

He winked at me. “I’ll take care of you.”

Little tingles radiated through me at his flirty tone. “Sounds great.”

He dropped his gaze, a flush sweeping across his cheeks. He looked almost bashful, which was not something I expected from Lex.

I cleared my throat. “How about family? Any brothers or sisters?” I asked.

His face tensed. “I had one brother, but he’s gone.”

“I’m sorry.” I grimaced.

He shrugged. “We weren’t close.”

“Still,” I said softly. “Family is family.”

He nodded, his expression hard to read. “What about you?”

“I’m an only child.” I met his curious gaze. “My parents both died two years ago.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. Was it a car accident or something?”

“No. My father had a heart attack, and my mother couldn’t live without him. Two weeks later, I swear she died of a broken heart.” I met his sympathetic gaze. “I miss her, but I’m oddly glad she died too. So that they can be together.”

“You’re a romantic I see.”
