He blew out a shaky breath. “We’re going to eat this food. I have plans for you tonight, and I’m going to need my strength.”

Excitement shivered through me at the carnal look in his eyes. “Sure. We can eat and have an early night.”

He went back to stirring the sizzling food. “Don’t plan on sleeping, Dylan.”

I laughed and went to set the table. As I moved around the table, performing the ritual of folding napkins and placing the salad fork next to the dinner fork, I realized that for the first time in forever, I was happy.

Chapter Twenty

Lex

Dylan was like a drug I couldn’t get enough of. We were both insatiable and spent the entire night enjoying each other’s bodies, until the sky to the east turned pink and orange. Exhausted, Dylan drifted off eventually, tucked in my arms, but I couldn’t sleep. I dreaded what the day would bring. Kidnapping Charles would be no easy task, and I was also faced with the fact that, after today, I’d never seen Dylan again. I couldn’t understand why the thought of that was so fucking depressing. But it was.

I kissed his hair and inhaled his sweet scent, trying to imprint all the details of him on my memory. His smooth skin and beautiful mouth drove me crazy. I loved the little freckles that spread across his nose, and the birthmark on his hip. For whatever reason, Dylan meant something to me. I was frustrated that I’d met him under these circumstances. Perhaps out in the real world, we’d have been able to have something more than just a few nights together. But then, if not for these circumstances, I’d never have met him at all.

When the sun was fully up, I carefully slipped out of Dylan’s room and showered in mine. I needed to get my head in the game. It was eight, and Gabriele and Hank would be waiting for me by nine. I took the license plate I’d found out of the picture frame and slipped it into my waistband. Then I went into the kitchen and drank some coffee and forced a piece of toast down. I was nervous about having to handle Charles alone, until reinforcements arrived. He was a big guy. Big and tough. I wasn’t a wimp by any means, but I also wasn’t Charles’s caliber of fierce. The guy probably ate nails for breakfast.

Dylan was still sleeping when I left the cabin. My heart hammered as I followed the street down toward the security building. The houses were dark, and I wasn’t sure if that was because everyone still slept or if they were all still on lockdown because of me. As much as I resented Charles, the guy did have good instincts. A part of me looked forward to seeing him bloody and broken. If all went well, today I’d finally get some answers about Dad.

It was a quarter to nine when I knocked on the door to the security building. The door opened abruptly, and two uniformed alphas stood there. They looked surprised to see me, and I got the feeling they hadn’t opened the door for me so much as they’d been about to exit the building.

“What do you want?” one of them asked gruffly. He was tall, skinny, and looked suspicious.

“I have a meeting with Charles.” I noticed they both wore shoulder holsters, and my pulse sped up. “I believe he knows I’m coming.”

The other alpha smirked. “Oh, yeah. You’re the outsider.”

I smiled pleasantly. “That’s right.”

They moved past me.

“He’s expecting you,” the skinny one said brusquely.

“Thanks.” I grabbed the door before it closed and entered the cool building. It was quiet inside. I’d pictured more activity, but there didn’t appear to be any other employees. That was good news for me. Charles alone would be hard to subdue, but if he had backup, I’d fail for sure.

There was one office with a light on, and I assumed that had to be Charles’s. When I appeared in the doorway, Charles was on the phone, pacing back and forth. He was speaking loudly, and he looked annoyed.

“I’m not interested in your excuses. We ordered Demerol, not morphine.” He had his back to me as he listened to the person on the other end of the line. “I know they both suppress pain, that’s not the point. We don’t use morphine.”

I entered the office, but he still wasn’t aware of my presence.

“I don’t care if you usually deal with Dr. Peters, you’re answering to me now.” He listened again. “Bullshit. They arenotthe same. Morphine can depress the baby’s ability to breathe. We aren’t using it. You need to get us a shipment of Demerol today,” he growled. “Don’t fuck with me, Ned, or I’ll have your ass fired.”

I stayed near the door, not sure if I should leave and give him privacy, or if that didn’t matter. He turned suddenly, and when he saw me, his face tensed. But the other person must have said something, because he turned his attention to the phone again.

“No. Not tomorrow. Today. We have several omegas scheduledtoday.” He listened and then grunted. “Fine. That will work. But if you don’t make it by noon, I’m finding another company.” He hung up and faced me. “Huh. You actually showed.”

I smirked and gave a cursory salute. “Reporting for my inquisition, sir!”

He didn’t appear amused. “I thought maybe you’d have another bout of the flu.”

“People get sick. Maybe you don’t because you’re perfect, but the rest of us do.”

His eyes narrowed. “Even you must admit the timing was suspicious.”

“Sorry. Shit happens.”

He curled his lip. “Especially with you around.”
