Charles met his gaze. “Yes. He wanted to kill them.”
Giving me a hard look, Dylan said, “Your father wanted to kill Jack?”
“He had his reasons.”
“Jack’s a good alpha. Why the hell would your dad want to hurt him?” Dylan looked angry.
The respect toward Jack in Dylan’s voice annoyed me. Had he had a crush on Jack? I wasn’t prepared for the anger that raced through me at that thought. “There’s a lot you don’t know, Dylan.”
He curled his lip. “Ain’t that the truth.”
Charles said, “Your father was outside the compound, Lex. He was never inside.”
“Bullshit. I found the licenseinsidethe compound.”
Charles shook his head. “He bribed a guard to bring Jack and Carter outside the gates. That’s where everything happened.”
I studied him. He didn’t look like he was lying, but then why had the license been inside the fortress? “That isn’t making sense.”
“I can’t tell you everything, but I can confirm that your dad and his driver are dead.” His voice was almost apologetic, which was a surprise.
When he confirmed my dad was dead, I’d expected to feel something. But mostly I was just numb, and still needing details. “You don’t get to pick and choose what you’re going to tell me. I need to know everything.”
His jaw hardened. “I can’t tell you certain things.”
Dylan looked at him bewildered. “You knew this whole time Lex’s dad was dead?”
Charles nodded. “Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell him? He… he deserved to know that.”
“Dylan, I didn’t know who Lex was.”
“Oh, yeah.” Dylan gave me a resentful look. “That’s right. He was lying.”
“I had to lie to get answers, Dylan. Maybe you haven’t noticed, but nobody likes to talk about what happens in the compound. I couldn’t get anything out of anybody in town. I needed to know what happened. I deserved closure.”
Dylan dropped his gaze, a line between his brows. “I’m sure if you’d been honest, Charles would have told you stuff.”
I laughed harshly. “You’re wrong. You actually think if I’d admitted who I was and asked Charles nicely, he’d have told me?”
Charles glanced at Dylan. “He’s right, Dylan. I wouldn’t have told him anything.”
Dylan looked shocked. “But… why?”
Sounding impatient, Charles said, “As I’ve said already, there are things I can’t talk about. I’ve said too much as it is.”
I pinned my gaze on Charles. “You say you didn’t hurt my dad… so who did?”
He pressed his lips tight. “I’ve told you all I can.”
A mean smile touched my lips. “If you think that is going to pacify me, you’re wrong. You’ve admitted Dad and Sal are dead. His license was inside the compound. You run the compound, that means the buck stops with you.”
Charles swallowed hard but then lifted his chin. “That’s fine. But I’ve said all I’m going to.”
Dylan didn’t look any more pleased with his response that I was. “That’s not fair, Charles. If you know what happened to his dad, why can’t you tell him? Not telling him makes you look guilty.”
“Then I look guilty.”
