He sighed. “Pretty much. That’s one reason I hate that goddamned world.”

I grimaced. “If he hadn’t come seeking revenge, he’d still be alive.”

“Probably,” he said tiredly. “And I’d never have had to do any of this shit.”

I met his blank stare. “But he did come here seeking retribution, and now he’s missing.”

“And I can’t get any answers because of all the secrets that surround the compound.” His tone was bitter.

“I’m telling you what I know, which, unfortunately, isn’t much.”

“I find it hard to believe my dad and his driver were attacked by some wild animal.” Lex’s tone was derisive.

“It seems far-fetched, but something happened because there was blood and ripped clothing.”

He frowned. “But no bodies.” He shot me a curious look. “What’s a S.E.O. baby?”

Shocked at his reference to the solar eclipse omegas, I dropped my gaze. He obviously had no idea what they were, but the fact he’d just used the term we used at the compound was startling. “Uhh… where did you hear that?”

“From Charles.”

Charles had let slip about the solar eclipse omega babies? That was hard to believe. He’d have to be completely out of it to blurt something like that out. “Oh, that’s just a name for the babies at the compound,” I said nonchalantly. He didn’t need to know that the only babies delivered at the compound were those of solar eclipse omegas.

“He was going on about protecting the S.E.O. babies.” Lex frowned. “That they were special.”

I stiffened. “Well, he was being beaten and tortured. He was probably confused.”

“True.” He watched me intently. “Are the babies connected to the Ancients or something?”

My gut clenched as I struggled to keep my face blank. “From what I understand, the Ancients don’t have babies.”

He rubbed his chin. “It’s weird he started talking about babies when I was asking about the Ancients protecting Carter and Jack. Makes me think they’re connected somehow.”

I didn’t respond.

“I don’t understand why Charles won’t just say who killed Dad,” he grumbled. “This all could have been avoided.”

I scowled. “It never should have come to this. Period.”

He shrugged. “You’ll never understand my world.”

“No. I never will.”

He rubbed his face roughly. “Which is why I’m fucking stupid for caring what you think about me.”

His words were so heartfelt, I found myself unwillingly moved. “I don’t think you’re all bad.”

He chuffed. “Just mostly?”

“I couldn’t live like you do,” I said quietly, holding his gaze.

“No.” His eyes glittered. “I know.”

I thought for a second he was going to kiss me. His gaze was on my mouth and his breathing quick. Would I let him? How could I want his mouth on mine after all he’d done to me? But I did. I still wanted him.

Gabriele’s brusque voice came from behind us. “Food’s ready.”

We both jumped, and Lex stood abruptly. “We’ll be right in.” His face was flushed, and he looked embarrassed.
