“It’s okay, Gabriele,” I repeated breathlessly, jumping forward to stomp on Hank’s wrist. He yelled in pain, and he dropped the cattle prod.

Gabriele watched, muscles bunched, his face angry and confused. I knew he wanted to join in, but he stayed where he was, obeying my command.

I moved to Dylan, who sat in stunned silence. I tugged the gag down, cut through the ties on his wrists and ankles, and pulled him up into my arms. It was stupid to take time for sentimental nonsense, but I had to touch him. I had to feel him against me so I could calm down. Once I knew he was okay, I released him. He looked shell-shocked, and while he hadn’t returned my hug, he also hadn’t fought me.

“What’s happening?” he whispered.

I didn’t respond. I needed to be sure Hank wasn’t getting the upper hand with Charles. I joined in the wrestling match, and after a few minutes, we had Hank hog-tied. His face was red, and even gagged, he screamed obscenities at us, but he wasn’t a threat at the moment.

Gabriele came up to me, looking furious. “What are youdoing?”

“This has gone too far.” My breathing was ragged. “I can’t let him use Dylan to make Charles talk.”

“Why the hell not?”

I shook my head. “I just can’t.”

He narrowed his eyes as if he thought I had lost my mind. “But… you can’t just let them go. They’ll go to the cops. What are you thinking? You can’t trust outsiders. For fuck’s sake, Lex. Are you nuts?”

“We won’t go to the cops.” Charles wiped at his bloody lip, seeming unimpressed by the scarlet smear on his hand.

“Bullshit,” Gabriele snapped. “Why wouldn’t you?”

Charles put his arm around Dylan. “I’m telling you, if you let us leave unharmed, we won’t go to the cops.”

Gabriele turned back to me. “This was your plan. I don’t understand why you’d betray your own plan.”

I blew out a tired breath. “What the hell is the point of this? Dad’s dead. There’s no bringing him back. What good would torturing Dylan do?”

Gabriele’s expression hardened. “Since when are you in the business of doing good?”

“Gabe,” I said softly. “You weren’t enjoying this any more than I was.”

“Like that’s the fucking point?” His eyes flashed angrily.

“I don’t have the stomach for this kind of thing. I never have.”

He looked like he wanted to punch me. “You’re choosing some omega you barely know over us?”

Shame washed through me. “I’m sorry.”

“You’re really not fit to lead. Your dad was right,” growled Gabriele.

I winced but grumbled, “I never wanted to lead.”

“Good. Because you’re a fucking disgrace,” he snarled. “If I don’t agree with this, are you going to tie me up too? Beat me into submission?”

“Do we have to?” Charles answered for me.

Gabriele shot him a warning look. “Come near me and I’ll put a bullet between your eyes.”

“Is that right?” Charles rumbled.

“We don’t need to tie him up,” I said gruffly. “Right, Gabriele?”

Fuming, he didn’t respond. But he also made no aggressive move toward us.

“What do we do with him?” Charles gestured toward Hank.
