“He is. But as you know, there aren’t a lot of available alphas in the compound.”

I smiled. “No. That’s how I met you. I went looking. Well, Dr. Peters made me go looking.”

“If Charles doesn’t let Gabriele leave the compound for a day trip soon, Gabriele might try and make a break for it. The poor guy needs to get laid.”

I grinned. “I could try talking to Charles.”

“About the restaurant idea or Gabriele’s sex life?”

“Both?”

He chuckled and hugged me. “You ready? We’re going to be late for our appointment.”

“I’m ready.” We left the cabin and made our way down the street toward the clinic. Now that Gabriele and Lex knew about the solar eclipse omegas, the lockdown had been lifted. Children played in the yards, and pregnant omegas didn’t hide inside their houses anymore. I was relieved because it made Lex feel like less of an outsider.

Once we reached the clinic, one of my coworkers weighed me and then led us to an examination room. Dr. Peters joined us after a short wait.

“How are you two today?” he asked cheerfully.

“Good,” I said.”

“Excited to see the baby,” Lex announced.

He had no idea how happy I was to hear him say that. It was obvious from his happy expression that he wasn’t secretly harboring suspicions that the pregnancy wasn’t real. That was the first time it really hit me Lex was 100 percent on board. I hadn’t realized how much I’d feared he was just going along with everything to pacify me.

Dr. Peters pulled the sonogram machine over to the examination table. “You know the drill, Dylan.”

“Yep.” I climbed on the table and lay down. I lifted my shirt and smiled at Lex. “I’ve seen a hundred of these. Never really thought I’d be the one lying on the table.”

His expression was gentle. “I’m glad it’s you I’m experiencing this with.”

Chuckling, Dr. Peters spread gel on my stomach. “You two are adorable. I’d never have thought of matching you and Lex, Dylan. I guess the Ancients know what they’re doing after all.”

“I hope so. They’re supposedly running everything.”

Lex’s expression changed, but when he saw me looking at him, he forced a smile. Dr. Peters fired up the machine, and soon we were looking at a black-and-gray image on the screen.

“All the arms and legs are present and accounted for.” Dr. Peters squinted at the screen. “Heartbeat is strong, lungs look great.” He smiled. “This baby is going to be a good size.”

“It’s all the food Lex makes for me.” I laughed.

“You’re not fat though,” Dr. Peters said. “Everything looks perfect. You and the baby.”

I met Lex’s gaze, and I felt a bit choked up. “We’re having a baby. An actual baby.”

He nodded, and his eyes seemed glassy too. He wasn’t a hugely emotional person, so it touched me even more to know he felt what I felt.

Dr. Peters printed the image and then turned off the machine. He handed Lex the picture, and Lex stared at it with an expression of wonder. “It really looks like a baby.”

“That’s because it is.” Dr. Peters smirked. “Funny how that works.”

Lex laughed.

“Okay, well, whatever you’re doing, just keep doing it. Everything is phenomenal.”

I wiped the gel off my stomach with the paper towels Dr. Peters handed me. “When do you need to see me next?”

“You’re going on paternity leave this week, right?” he asked.
