“It’s so quiet.” He sipped his third beer and then sighed. “Sometimes a little too quiet.”

I smiled. “Where did you live before?”

“Bartholomew, Arizona.”

“Never heard of it.”

“It’s a fairly large city. Lots of noise, traffic, crime.”

I studied his profile, taking in his perfect nose and long lashes. “Do you plan on going back there?”

He frowned. “I haven’t thought that far ahead.”

“Can you stay here as long as you want?” I asked. “Or will Commander Charlie make you leave?”

He laughed. “He won’t make me leave. Charles is all right. He’s just a stickler for rules.”

“Hmmm.”

He laughed again, turning his amused gaze on me. “Really. He’s an okay guy.”

“He doesn’t like me.”

“No. He doesn’t.” He grinned.

It was nice to see him smile. Most of my time with Dylan he’d been either terrified or emotionally in pain. I liked seeing his eyes bright and his mood playful. “I’ll probably win him over. I can get most people to like me.”

He snorted. “You have quite an ego.”

I shrugged. “It’s the truth. People usually warm up to me.”

He rolled his eyes. “I didn’t.”

“You did eventually.” I smirked.

“We were kidnapped.” He chuffed. “I’d have bonded toanyonewho was thrown in with me.”

I was surprised when his heartfelt statement bothered me. “Oh, really?”

“Yes.”

“That’s not a very flattering thing to say to the alpha who saved your ass.” What did I care if he had no real connection to me? I wasn’t here to form a bond with him or anyone. I was here to find out info about Dad’s disappearance.

He studied me. “I was happy to see you though. Not gonna lie. When they threw you into that bathroom with me…” He laughed gruffly. “I thought I was dreaming.”

“See, now you get it. Most omegas think I’m a dream.”

“Like I said, you have quite the ego.” He sighed and sipped his beer.

We sat in companionable silence, watching the pink and lavender sky darken as the sun lowered in the sky. Once Dylan went to bed, I planned on sneaking out of the cabin. I hoped there would be some moonlight tonight. I didn’t have a flashlight, but if I did, I’d probably have been reticent to use it. No doubt Charles and his minions would notice any unauthorized flashlight usage.

“Is there anyone waiting anxiously for you to return home?” he asked casually.

“No one in particular.” I shot him a glance, wondering why he was asking. “Why?”

“Curiosity.” He avoided my gaze. “I don’t know much about your personal life. I know you like women, and that you can cook.”

“And that I’m a hero.”
