Chapter Twenty-Five

Dylan

Once Lex went outside with Gabriele, I was able to turn my full attention on Charles. If he thought the conversation about bringing Lex into the compound was over, he was dead wrong. He sat in a chair, holding ice to his head, wincing every now and then as if he were in pain. The bump on his head had gone down overnight, but the skin was tinged purple.

“Can I get you anything?” I asked, giving Hank an uneasy glance. He was unconscious, but he still made me nervous. Even tied up he was a malevolent presence.

As expected, Charles responded, “No.”

I couldn’t help but smile. He was one of the proudest alphas I knew. I had the feeling his entire leg could be chopped off and he wouldn’t admit he was in pain. “You sure?”

“Yes.”

I cleared my throat. “Are you up to talking?”

He slid his slate eyes to mine, and there was a hint of suspicion. “What about?”

I pushed down the nervousness I felt. “I still say Lex should come to the compound with us.”

He sighed wearily. “Come on, Dylan. Stop.”

I forced myself not to shrink from his disapproving stare. “Just for a while.”

He shook his head. “No.”

Irritation prickled the back of my neck. “Charles, you’re being short-sighted.”

“In what way?”

“Lex is the only reason I wasn’t tortured.” I shivered.

He scowled. “Dylan, it’s his fault you were ever even vulnerable.”

“I… I know… but he could have just stuck to the plan. It would have been easier for him to do that.” I met his gaze full-on. “But he didn’t. He stood up for me. He protected me.”

He took a deep breath, and I knew he was going to try and pacify me.

“No, don’t do that,” I snapped. “Don’t pat me on the head and ignore what I’m saying. I’m not a child. I want Lex to be brought into the compound.”

“You don’t say who enters. I do.” His tone was patient.

“I should have some say in this.”

“Why?”

I frowned. “Because I’m a huge reason for why Lex is now in danger.”

“You’re too emotionally involved to be logical about this.”

“You’re not being logical either. You’re being spiteful.”

He laughed harshly. “What?”

“You’re being unfair because you also are too emotionally involved.”

“Pfft. You’re wrong.”

“No. You’re allowing your dislike of him to overshadow what is the right thing to do.”
