I frowned. “Was it engine trouble?”
Polly’s gaze flickered. “Uh, well… no, it was a fuel system issue, but still…”
“It made me a believer.” Janelle widened her eyes.
“I see.” I grimaced. “But the fuel system goofing up and the engines going on fire, they’re not really the same thing, are they?”
Polly scowled. “The point is, I predicted that her father was indanger.”
“Right.” I forced a smile. “Your… talent… is intimidating.”
Janelle shivered. “All I know is if Polly has a bad feeling about today, I need to find Archie and split.”
Polly nodded. “The sooner, the better.”
The young chauffeur from earlier approached. “Miss Raiden… er… I guess it’s Mrs. Brady now.” He gave an awkward laugh. “Did you want me to start loading the gifts into the trunk of the limousine?”
“I guess? Is that what Archie wants you to do, Thomas?” Janelle asked.
Frowning, Thomas said, “Not sure. I can’t find him. But your mother insisted I should get on that right away.”
“Oh.” Under her breath, Janelle added, “Trust Mother to boss everyone around.”
Polly sniggered. “You should’ve seen the waitstaff anytime they saw your mom coming toward them. They scattered like scared sheep.”
Janelle muttered, “Yes, my mother can be a real witch.”
Thomas looked uncomfortable. “Oh, I wouldn’t know about that.”
Janelle gave a sheepish smile. “Sorry. She just has a really strong personality. She likes to control everything, and it gets a bit smothering.”
Royce said, “You’re her only daughter. She probably wanted your wedding to be perfect.”
Wrinkling her brow, Janelle said, “Today has been anything but perfect.”
Thomas cleared his throat. “What would you like me to do about the gifts, Mrs. Brady?”
“I guess load them into the car.” She sighed. “Then Archie and I can make a quick getaway.”
Thomas tipped his hat. “Excellent. I’ll get the gifts loaded up pronto.” He walked off, looking determined.
Polly watched him go. “He’s so damn cute. I wished he’d notice I exist.”
Giving her friend a sympathetic look, Janelle said, “He’s very focused on his job.”
“I noticed,” complained Polly. She gave Janelle an envious look. “I don’t attract men like bees to honey the way Janelle does.”
“Oh, that’s not true.” Janelle grimaced.
“It is true. I was there the night you met Archie at that art museum thingy. He was smitten instantly. He barely looked at me the whole time.” Polly pouted. “You’re gorgeous, andyou’re rich. It’s not fair. Girls like me never have a chance.”
Janelle frowned. “Don’t be like that, Polly. You have plenty of guys circling you.”
Polly laughed. “But never the ones I want.”
Smiling, Janelle said, “Well, Archie is lucky to have a guy so focused on doing a good job. It’s good for business that he found Thomas. Archie can’t believe his luck in finding such a hardworking employee. The pool of applicants with great driving records was pretty tiny in Rainy Dale. Thomas has an awesome attitude too.”
“Plus, he’s smoking hot.” Polly grinned. “That body and that smile. God, I’d kill for his attention.”
