“You said she was still wearing her dress, correct?” If memory served, she’d changed her clothing at one point.

He nodded. “Yes.”

“What happened next? After Angela came back from around the building? Did Archie also come back into sight?”

He shook his head. “No. Not then.”

“Where did Angela go?”

“I’m not sure. Like I said, I was trying to stay out of sight.” He chewed the side of his cheek, looking lost in thought.

“What did you do next?”

“Well, I was beginning to realize coming back to the reception was stupid.” His mouth drooped. “I was trying to figure out a way to go talk to Janelle because she was sitting on the curb alone. But I couldn’t approach her without people seeing me.”

“Okay.”

“But then I heard people arguing.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Who was arguing?”

“Janelle’s dad, Michael. He was having words with Archie.”

“So then Archie had reappeared at this point?”

“Yeah. He must have slipped back without me noticing.” Kobe unbuttoned the top button of his shirt, eyeing the bottle of water on the table. “You think I could have some water?”

I pushed the bottle toward him. “Sure. I brought this in for you.”

“Thanks.” He twisted off the top and gulped half the bottle down. He set the bottle on the table, looking even more exhausted. “This is a nightmare.”

I had a pang of sympathy for him. “I know it’s rough.”

He sighed and drank more water. Once the bottle was empty, he set it on its side, resting his hand on it. “Where was I?”

“You were telling me you witnessed an argument between Michael and Archie.” It sure was convenient that he’d witnessed someone else arguing with the victim. Was he telling the truth or throwing up a smokescreen so that he wasn’t the only person to have argued with Archie right before his death?

“Yeah. Michael was furious. To be honest, I thought he might punch Archie.”

“Could you hear anything they were saying?”

He shook his head. “No. I assumed Michael saw Angela and Archie going around the side of the building together. I’m sure he knows what his wife is like when she drinks.”

“But you didn’t catch any of their conversation?”

“Sorry. Like I said, my real priority was just staying hidden. I knew everybody at the wedding was pissed at me.”

Feeling a bit frustrated, I said, “Okay, so you supposedly saw Archie and Angela sneaking off to maybe have sex, plus you saw Archie and Michael arguing. Are you telling me the truth, or are you just trying to throw me off track?”

He frowned. “I’m telling you everything I saw. You asked me to tell you, and that’s what I’m doing. I can’t help it if what I saw might help me. I hope it does.”

“Fair enough.”

He slowly batted the empty bottle back and forth between his hands. He was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, “Did Janelle mention to you she’s been… seeing things?”

I hesitated. “Yes. She told Dr. Thornton.”

He glanced up under his brow. “Do you believe her?”
