I gave a gruff laugh. “Are you asking me if I believe Janelle has been seeing Archie’s dead wife?”

“I guess I am asking you that.”

“Do you believe her?” I countered.

A half-smile touched his lips. “I asked you first, Sheriff.”

After a pause, I said, “I believe Janelle believes what she’s seeing.”

He smirked. “How very diplomatic.”

“Hey, at least I answered.”

He grimaced. “Kind of. It was more of a no-answer answer.”

I crossed my arms, holding his gaze. “I don’t believe in ghosts. I think Janelle is someone who’s been under tremendous stress.”

“I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that means you don’t believe her.”

“I don’t know Janelle as well as you. That’s why I’m asking what you think.”

A line formed between his dark brows. “Honestly, knowing Janelle as well as I do, I think she really is seeing someone.”

“You think she’s seeing a ghost?”

He shook his head. “No. But someone is watching her.”

“Perhaps Janelle has a stalker.”

“Maybe. She’s rich, and that attracts weirdos.” He pinched the skin between his eyes. “She called me the first time it happened. She was terrified.”

“When was the first time?”

“I’d say about a month ago when she was walking her dog one evening. She said she saw a woman with long dark hair, wearing what looked like a wedding dress.”

“And she immediately assumed it was Kimora?”

“Well, she’d seen a few photos of Kimora the night before, and she was positive it was her.”

“Hmmm,” I said. “So, what was this woman in the dress doing?”

“Nothing. Janelle said she just stared at her from a distance.” He grimaced. “She was terrified because she recognized the woman from the photos as Archie’s dead wife.”

I frowned. “Seems a little weird she’d only start appearing to JanelleafterJanelle saw the photos. Why not make her ghostly visits before that? She had six months to show up.”

“I don’t understand your point?”

I shrugged. “I’m saying because of the timing, it makes me think thisisall in Janelle’s head.”

“But why?”

“Because it was only after she knew what Kimora looked like that she started having sightings.”

“Maybe Kimora was always there, but Janelle just didn’t know it was her.”

I grimaced. “Wouldn’t Janelle still have wondered who this woman was, hanging around her house in a wedding dress?”

“Oh, I see what you mean.” He sighed. “I think I know what Janelle would say to you about the sudden appearance of Kimora.”
