“No, thank you. Hopefully, we won’t take up too much of your time.”

“Okay, take a seat. How can I help you?” he asked. He hoped they had more information about Trish.

“So, we’ve investigated further into the missing money and your missing ex-wife. We have a bit more information to share with you and gather your thoughts on if that’s okay?”

“Sure.”

“After looking into the accounts at the bank and the information they provided along with some CCTV footage, we were able to find out that your ex-wife had an accomplice. She’s been in a relationship with a bank cashier for the last fourteen months. From what we gather, the cashier had been siphoning money out of your children’s accounts and into your ex-wife’s account over the entire period they were together. Initially, the money was small amounts until they suddenly began getting larger. We have no information as to what the funds were spent on after they had been transferred, but we do know that the final transfer happened as you were waiting in the bank on Tuesday afternoon.”

“The cashier transferred the money while I was actually there?” Trent couldn’t believe the gall of the guy.

“Yes, he had been working the desk when you arrived and through the CCTV, we could see he saw you, went onto his computer, used his phone, which he shouldn’t have had on him to begin with, and then he left the bank. And hasn’t returned.”

“He’s gone with her?”

“That’s what we assume at the moment.”

“Do you know where they are?”

“Not, at present, no.”

“How did you find out about him?”

“A couple of things. When we looked at tracing the transfers, there was a thumbprint of someone trying to hide what they were doing. They were good, but not as good as the people we employ. Therefore, we were able to see which computers the transfers were made from and at what times. This led us back to the cashier, even though he tried to make it look like it was all your ex-wife’s fault. We were also able to obtain your ex-wife’s telephone records. It showed a phone call from a mobile at the same time the cashier made one, and it was confirmed it was his number.”

Trent blew out a breath. “Do you know who the guy is?”

The police officers looked at each other. “Yes, we do. He is the youngest son of the owner of the bank. He’s twenty-one.”

Trent laughed. “Jesus Christ, Trish, what the hell are you doing? He’s twenty-one years younger than she is!” He shook his head. “Doesn’t really surprise me, though.”

“We wanted to ask if there was anywhere you can think of that she may go to or visit?”

“Um, she is close to her parents, and I wouldn’t put it past them to hide her because in their eyes, she can do no wrong. Other than that, she loves Spain. We used to go to the Costa Dorada with the kids. No idea where else.”

“Thank you, that will give us somewhere to look.”

“Do you think you’ll find them?”

“I’ll be honest with you, Mr Walker. I think we will find them. Eventually. I wouldn’t hold my breath on it being too soon though. What I would suggest is contacting the bank; they should be able to refund you the money since it was the fault of an employee. My advice? Go on with your lives. We’ll be in touch when we have more information or questions.”

“Thank you for coming, officers.”

He showed them out the door just as Max came up the hallway.

“Hey, everything okay?” Max asked as he watched the police officer’s leave.

“Yeah, they just came with more information.” Trent proceeded to explain what the police had just told him while he made coffee—new stuff he’d just bought.

“Wow, so not great news then.”

“Well, you see, I think it is.” Trent laughed at Max’s shocked face. “Not the bit about the missing money, that’s a pain in my ass, but the rest…yeah.”

“Care to explain?”

“Trish isn’t in our lives anymore. Yeah, there’s a chance she’ll come back and get caught and we’ll have to deal with the court case and everything. But she’s not here now. She’s not interfering in our lives. She’s not messing around with my daughters. She’s gone. We can carry on with our lives as we see fit, without having her barging in every minute of the day. We can be happy. Sorry, happier. And to top it all, the police think the bank would refund the money because an employee was involved.” Trent sat next to Max. “What more can I ask for?”

“I have something for you,” Max said, his smile huge.
