“So, you’re going to be in my class at some point, are you?” Simon stepped close…too close for Aaron’s liking.

He made a show of heading to his bag and hooking it on his shoulder. “Yes, I will be in every class over the next few months.” And if Aaron had his way, Simon’s would be one of the last.

“That’s good to know. I’ll make sure you feel welcome.”

“Hopefully, you make all the staff in your class feel welcome,” Aaron said, quirking an eyebrow.

“Of course!” Simon waved his hand, dismissing Aaron’s concern. “The new guy seems nice.”

The tone in Simon’s voice caught Aaron’s notice, and he shifted to face Simon, trying to show nonchalance. “Both new people are great. It’s why I hired them. If there’s nothing else, Simon, I have to go.”

He bid goodbye. He wanted to get in contact with Zaire as soon as possible. He’d missed seeing him today. How he’d become so enamoured with the guy in such a short time, he’d never know. Grabbing his final things from his office, he exited the school and began the drive home, dialling Zaire on the journey. The phone rang but went to voicemail, so Aaron left a brief message, asking Zaire to call him when he had a minute. When he arrived home, he’d not received a call or message, so he sent Zaire a text as well.

Hi. I’m happy you decided to join the team. You’ll do great. Would you like to come around for a late dinner? x

Hopefully, Zaire would get the message and accept. Aaron liked the idea of making some dinner for them both and pampering Zaire.

When he’d not received a message an hour later, Aaron tried calling again, to no avail. An hour after, he tried again. By this point, he was getting worried something had happened to Zaire. He had no other contact details for anyone in Zaire’s life, so had no way of knowing if something happened to him.

He paced the living room, running his hands repeatedly through his hair and scratching his beard. When his phone rang, he dived for it, shoulders releasing when he saw it was Zaire.

“Zaire? Is everything okay?” He couldn’t help the worried tone that escaped.

“Sorry, it’s Rod, Zaire’s friend.”

“Is Zaire okay? Where is he? What’s wrong?”

“Woah, slow down. Everything’s fine. Or at least it would be if I didn’t have a completely wasted Zaire in my company.”

“He’s drunk?” Aaron was surprised. Not that Zaire was drunk, butwhywas he drunk?

“Yep, and he needs looking after. I hear you’re the person for the job.” The humour in Rod’s voice had Aaron relaxing.

“I am. Where are you?”

“In a taxi. The driver is patiently waiting for your address so I can bring Zaire to you.”

Aaron gave Rod his address and hung up. He moved his pacing to the hallway as he waited for them to arrive. When he heard a car pull up, he threw the door open and stalked down the path. The taxi door opened, and Aaron quickly caught the body that almost fell out of the car.

“Fuh,” Zaire laughed uncontrollably as he gripped Aaron’s arm. “Hey, I know you.” Zaire’s words merged as his tongue fought to work properly.

Rod exited the taxi, asking him to wait for him to come back. “Sorry, he jumped out quicker than I could grab him.”

“No problem. What caused this? I didn’t think Zaire ever got like this,” Aaron questioned as he helped Zaire up the path to the house.

“You caused this.”

Aaron whipped his gaze to Rod’s in confusion. “What do you mean I caused this? Everything has been fine between us.” He continued into the house.

“Well, obviously not. You need to ask your past relationships to stop butting into your current relationships. That is if it is a past relationship.”

“If what is a past relationship? You’re making no sense.” Aaron led an almost comatose Zaire to the sofa, laying him down and covering him with a blanket.

“According to Zaire, after he’d had a few drinks inside him, a guy cornered him at the meeting today, making insinuations. Zaire got upset you hadn’t told him about your past with any staff, and it hurt him.”

“You’re not making sense, Rod. I’ve not had a relationship with anyone from scho—fuck! Simon.” Aaron threaded his hands through his hair.

“He mentioned Simon, yes. You need to tell Zaire about the guy, and anyone else he might run into.”
