“I understand. Take a few deep breaths, sweet boy,” Aaron said in a low voice. “It can be overwhelming when you haven’t had this before. If you want me to stop, I can, but I would like it if you could come to enjoy these little…gifts from me to you.”
“Don’t stop,” he whispered.
Aaron smiled, but his mouth curled down when he looked out the window. “Take this and head to the staff toilets for a few minutes. I’ll send a message to Uma that you’ll be a few minutes late because I’ve asked you to do something. Once you feel able, head to work. Okay?” Zaire nodded. “Words, sweetheart.”
“Yes…Daddy.” The final word was mouthed rather than spoken.
“I really want to hug you right now, but I can’t. I’m so sorry.”
Zaire gazed at him, a smile gracing his face now he was settling again. The alcohol last night must have broken down some more of his walls because he wasn’t usually so emotional. He took the bag Aaron passed him, grinned as best he could and sauntered out of the office to the toilets. Even being in Aaron’s company had settled something inside him.
When he finally got to class, Uma sent him a worried gaze, and he knew nothing would get past her. It was a matter of time before she asked him if he was okay. Could he do this secret relationship? How was it even going to be possible?
Uma finally caught up to him at the children’s break time, when one of the staff was covering while he helped Uma do some organising for the next part of the day.
“Is everything alright with you? You seem…out of sorts, today?”
Zaire laughed. “Is that your way of telling me I look like shit?”
Uma’s eyes widened, then she chuckled. “No, although you do look a little worse for wear.”
“Yeah, I had a long night last night. Too much alcohol was involved. I promise that is not my normal situation. I’m usually a lot more put together than this.” He was worried she wouldn’t want him in the class if he was deemed unreliable.
“Don’t be silly. Of course, I know this isn’t you. It’s why I’m so worried. Is there anything I can help with?”
Zaire’s heart softened. Uma was a generous and gentle soul. “No but thank you for the offer.”
“Well, you know where I am if you need anything at all.”
“Thank you.”
The rest of the day was uneventful apart from when he opened his deli bag and saw a chicken salad sandwich, a small pot of pasta and two pieces of fruit along with an apple juice. Zaire had felt tears pricking again but refused to allow them free. Rod had replied to his message as well, telling him to stop being a jerk and talk to his Daddy. He’d rolled his eyes and didn’t reply.
When he got in his car, he reminded himself to drive to Aaron’s house, not his own, and when he finally pulled up, Aaron’s car wasn’t there. While he waited, he checked his phone, seeing another message from Rod.
You’re all good, Zaire. What are friends for if you can’t let the barriers go once in a while? Make sure you talk things through with Aaron. He seems like a nice guy. Let me know how you are when you get five.
Zaire replied as Aaron pulled into the driveway.
I’m good. I’m at Aaron’s now. We briefly spoke this morning and things seem okay between us. I’ll let you know if it changes. I’m not planning on being home tonight, so I’ll message you again tomorrow. Thanks for everything last night. Especially taking me to Aaron’s, even if it was because you didn’t want to look after me, lol.
His phone buzzed again as he climbed out of his car, and he smiled at the middle finger salute Rod replied with.
“You look happy.”
Zaire grinned up at Aaron. “Just messaging Rod. He’s an idiot sometimes, but a lovable one.”
“He seemed nice when I met him last night.”
The reminder of the previous evening tensed Zaire’s muscles, knowing what was going to happen when he entered Aaron’s house, even if he didn’t know the specifics.
“Come on in. Hang your stuff up and follow me to the kitchen.”
Zaire did as asked without replying. When he entered the kitchen, Aaron was busy preparing some food and placed a plate with some fruit slices, a yoghurt and a glass of milk in front of Zaire.
“Eat up. I don’t want you passing out from hunger if you can’t last until dinner.” Aaron chuckled as he said it.
Zaire ate his food, surprisingly hungry, though he didn’t usually eat straight after work. When he finished, Aaron took the plate from him and rinsed it before coming back to sit next to Zaire.
