“What more do you want? I’m not giving you a play by play of our activities.” Aaron shook his head.

Nora laughed. “I see you have collared him, but have you hit the bump yet?”

Aaron glanced across at Zaire, seeing him in animated conversation with Rod, Colin and Dave, and focused back on Nora and Cord. “Yes. You know we had a bit of an issue on Monday, but with Rod’s help, it got sorted quickly.”

Nora raised her eyebrows. “You know that’s not the bump I meant.”

Clenching his jaw, Aaron grabbed his beer and took a long gulp. He knew exactly what she meant. In any new relationship, there seemed to be a general bump several days or weeks into it, where the boy debated whether he was with the right Daddy, or happy where he was, or something similar. Most other Daddies or Mummies he knew of had witnessed or experienced the same thing, just in different ways. He had hoped their differences on Monday was their ‘bump,’ but Nora made him reconsider. Zaire had taken everything so well, except for the Simon issue, but they got through it. He hoped Zaire would talk to him if he had any second thoughts about them.

Chapter 13

Zaire

Aaron became quiet as the night wore on. Zaire wondered what had been said for him to retreat, but every time Zaire checked in with him, he’d smiled and said he was fine. Now, heading to Zaire’s house in a taxi, Aaron was gripping Zaire’s hand and staring out of the window as if all the answers of the world were out there.

Zaire had a fantastic night. He’d gotten to know Nora and Geoff, who were great, and Cord, who was a bit of an asshole, but he could imagine would be a wonderful Daddy to some boy. He’d been able to catch up with Colin, too. He was enjoying his time with Dave, and Zaire had double-checked he was happy, which he was. As for Rod, Zaire had hugged him to thank him for taking him back to Aaron on Monday. Although they had spoken throughout the week, Zaire hadn’t seen him since and owed him a lot.

But his night had been overshadowed by Aaron’s silent behaviour. The only thing Zaire could think of was someone had said something to him, and it worried Zaire. He didn’t want someone to warn Aaron away from him. He’d just found his Daddy; he didn’t want to lose him again.

The worry had him resting his head on Aaron’s shoulder and wrapping his free arm around Aaron’s biceps, trying to get as close as he could without mounting him.

A hand came up and stroked his hair. “Are you okay, sweetheart?”

“Uh-huh,” he answered. He wasn’t sure how to explain what he was feeling, although he needed to try because they promised communication between them. It meant Aaron needed to talk, too. He kept silent until they got to his place. “Daddy?” he said when they were in the kitchen, Aaron grabbing some water.

“Yes, sweet boy.” Aaron smiled across at him.

“You said we needed to talk to each other—to communicate.”

“Yes?” Aaron said when Zaire didn’t continue.

“What’s wrong, Daddy? You’ve been quiet all night. Did I do something wrong?” He stood there, wringing his hands together, not wanting to bring it up but needing to all the same.

Aaron rubbed a hand over his mouth and beard before answering, “No, Zaire. You’ve done nothing wrong.” He sighed, shoulder slumping. “It’s…Come on, let’s go sit for a minute. I’ll explain what was said.”

They moved to the sofa, and Aaron lifted his arm so Zaire could snuggle up against him. Zaire took some comfort in the fact Aaron was not pushing him away, at least not physically.

“In many Daddy or Mummy relationships, there is a point when the boy or girl begins to doubt what they have together is true. We call it ‘the bump.’ Most bumps are minor, and everyone carries on as normal afterwards, but sometimes, the bump ends the relationship.”

“And you’re worried we haven’t hit my bump yet?”

Aaron nodded. “Nora reminded me about it tonight, and it got me thinking. Monday wasabump, but I don’t think it was one which could potentially make you reconsider what we have.”

Zaire sat upright. “I don’t think I’m going to have a bump, Daddy. I really don’t. Monday made me realise I want you in my life. I want everything with you. No one has ever made me feel like you do. Haven’t we already been through so many ups and downs?”

“Yes, we have. I want you to be happy, that’s all. And if it ends up that I don’t make you happy, I’ll accept it, but I won’t like it.”

Zaire moved, straddling Aaron and bringing their faces closer together. “I can’t predict the future, but as of this moment in time, I can honestly say I have never been happier.” His hand trailed across his collar as he gave Aaron a beaming smile.

Aaron’s melancholic expression lifted, and Zaire leaned in for a kiss, resting his hands against his Daddy’s beard, feeling the scratchy texture tickle his palms. Their kiss was languid, and Zaire got lost in the sensations, his brain completely switching off from anything not related to the feel of Aaron beneath and around him.

As Zaire’s arousal increased, he rocked his hips against Aaron, the friction barely there and not quite enough. Aaron gripped his waist, stilling his movements and pulling away from his mouth.

“Are you trying to take something you didn’t ask for?” Aaron growled, his voice significantly deeper than usual.

Zaire’s eyes widened as he flicked through his options. He could deny thrusting against Aaron and be guaranteed a punishment of some sort, and possibly not a good one, or he could admit it and possibly get a good punishment for being honest. The longer he stared at Aaron, the less sure he was of his best choice.
