“Iwillchange things in this school, and you have no choice but to go along with it. For instance, this animosity you have for Zaire is not about how he is dressed, is it?”

Zaire had been about to scamper past the open door but froze with the words Aaron spoke.

“I see how you watch him. You could do so much better.”

“You mean you? No, thank you, Simon. I have told you before. I’m not interested.”

There was silence for several tense minutes, and Zaire was ready to flee in case one or the other exited the office.

“How can you let him in this school dressed like that! He looks like a girl!”

“No, he doesn’t. He looks like a boy.Myboy. So, back the fuck off and get out!”

Chapter 16

Aaron

With those words, Aaron flung his hand out, indicating the door. He was fuming. He couldn’t remember the last time he had been so angry as he was at that moment. Everything inside and out was vibrating with a wave of fury so strong, he could taste it.

Simon glared at him and marched over to the door, flinging it wide so it banged against the wall loudly and stopped. Standing in the doorway was Zaire, and Aaron had no doubt he had heard enough to be ready to run.

“Zaire? Come here, please.” Aaron’s voice brooked no argument, although he could see Zaire wanting to. Zaire remained stubbornly where he was, gaze flicking from Aaron to Simon and back again. “Simon, leave. Now! You’ve done enough today, I think. We will be taking this further.”

“You bet your assI’llbe taking this further. Enjoy the time with yourgirlfriend,” he sneered as he slunk past Zaire.

“Zaire!”

Zaire’s pained gaze met his, and Aaron wanted to soften towards him, but it was not what Zaire needed right now.

“In my office. Now.”

Zaire shuffled forward until he was a step across the doorway, and Aaron withheld a chuckle at the show of obedience versus Zaire’s need to run.

“Shut the door and come stand in front of me.”

The door clicked shut, the sound loud in the silence. Zaire stepped closer to Aaron, but there was too much space as far as Aaron was concerned.

“Here,” he said, pointing to the floor right in front of him. Zaire trailed closer until they were almost toe to toe, and Zaire had to lift his head to look at Aaron. “His words mean nothing. Do you understand?”

Zaire swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing quickly, but he didn’t reply.

“His words mean nothing. Do you understand me?” Aaron reiterated, this time with a raised eyebrow.

Zaire licked his lips, and his nostrils flared. “Yes,” he uttered.

“I didn’t hear you.”

“Yes,” Zaire said louder, though Aaron could hear the tremor.

“How did your colleagues react this morning when you entered the classroom?” Aaron made sure to keep their gazes locked. He didn’t want to lose Zaire’s focus.

“Um…everyone was nice.”

“Did anyone say anything horrible to you?”

Zaire shook his head.
