It was worrying Freddie, too. Just because Umar had admitted what truly happened to them didn’t mean he would do it to the police. After all, he would get into trouble for telling a lie in the first place. Hopefully, his father could stop that from happening. Umar had been punished enough for his transgressions, in Freddie’s opinion.

“I think he will. He knows right from wrong, even if he fell onto the wrong side for a short time. If someone threatened my family, I would probably do the same thing. You do anything for family.”

Damon twisted to look out of the window, and Freddie frowned. As much as he knew everything there was to know about Damon, the man confused him sometimes. Freddie turned his attention back to the papers. There was a lot of information about Harvey Johnson, and he was sure they’d be able to find him at one of the addresses listed. Maverick would be an excellent investigator.

They arrived at the police station and climbed out, waiting for Umar and Quinn to join them.

“Are you okay?” he asked Umar.

The sub wrung his hands between him but nodded. “I will be. No matter what happens to me, I will make sure Prince Douglas is free. It’s not fair to him, and I deeply apologise.”

Freddie gave a small smile. “Douglas is the one you need to apologise to, but by telling the truth, you are mending some of those bridges already. The police are waiting for what we have to tell them.”

He placed a hand on Umar’s elbow, knowing his back would be extremely raw and sore, and guided him into the station. Immediately, they were shepherded through to a room with no windows, where his father, the Commissioner and two police officers waited.

“Frederick, what do you have to tell us?” His father frowned, his gaze flicking to the subs, but he didn’t ask them to leave.

“Umar has something to tell the officers in charge of the case.”

Andrew raised his eyebrows and glanced at the officers. “Commissioner?”

The older gentleman stepped closer but not too close. “Umar, let’s take this into an interview room—”

“No, please, sir. I’m happy to talk with everyone present,” Umar said, holding onto Quinn’s hand.

The Commissioner shared a look with the officers and the king, then nodded. “Okay. Take a seat. Sampson, please fetch a recorder.”

One officer dashed out of the room, and Umar stepped over to a chair the Commissioner had pointed to and pulled Quinn down beside him. The rest of them fanned out around the room, trying not to crowd them.

When Sampson returned, he placed the recording device on the table and started the interview. By the time Umar had finished his amended statement and answered any questions the officers had, Freddie’s father looked pleased. Catching his eye, his father nodded his head at him.

“Okay, I’ve heard enough,” the Commissioner said. He stared at Andrew. “Let’s get your boy out.”

King Andrew held out his hand to the Commissioner. “Thank you.”

Freddie stepped closer. “There is one more thing, too.” He held out the sheets of paper. “This is some information we found on Harvey Johnson. I hope it will be useful.”

The Commissioner raised his eyebrows when he shuffled through them. “You might need to explain your sources for this.”

Freddie smiled. “Not a problem. Douglas’s boyfriend, Maverick, is a social media manager. He had the social media world at his fingertips. I’m sure he would have evidenced where this information came from, but if he hasn’t, he won’t hesitate to tell you.”

The Commissioner nodded and passed the paper to Sampson. “Come on, then. He’s been in there long enough. Sampson, can you please finish up with Umar? Then he can go home.”

“I’ll ensure he’s taken home,” Freddie said.

His father pulled him into his embrace. “Thank you, son.”

“Don’t thank me, Father. Thank Maverick. You know they’re good for each other. Let them be together.”

Andrew pulled back and sighed. He nodded but said nothing, then followed the Commissioner out of the room. Freddie blew out a breath and leaned back against the wall next to Damon. They shared a smile, then waited for Umar to finish.

Chapter 27

Douglas

Spending the last few hours in a dreary room with only the necessities had not been his plan for the evening, but after several hours of questioning, he was glad of the reprieve. He’d not been able to sleep at all, and he’d spent the time remembering everything about Mav he could. Hearing his voice in his head as he sang to him. Smiling at the expressions on his face in reaction to different things. Anything that took him away from where he was.
