"Saige?"

Khol and I jumped up and saw her gran's figure materialize through the dust. He rushed over to her, tucking her against his large frame.

"We must stop her. This is a magical meltdown of epic proportions. She'll destroy the whole town at this rate," she shouted, her curly hair flying around her face.

"We can't even get close to her!" Khol yelled, his voice carrying away on the wind.

"What set this off?" Bette questioned, holding the hair from her face.

"Fischer. He… He’s dead," I informed her, reaching out and placing a hand on her shoulder as her face paled and crumpled in pain.

"Oh no," she breathed.

The three of us jumped as the ground shook so violently, I was concerned it was going to split open.

Bette pushed us to the side, stepping forward, and lifting her hands as she began screaming out a powerful chant. My skin tingled and I could feel the force of her magic doing her bidding. Whatever she had planned, I hoped like hell it was going to work.

Vines exploded from her hands and disappeared into the thick, dusty air, the horrible keening sounds coming from her granddaughter guiding them to their target.

"NO! NO! NO! NOOOO!" Goldie's anguished cries rose above the wind and stabbed me right in the chest.

"What are you doing to her?" Khol shouted, moving to stand beside Bette.

"Soothing her. I can't physically go to her, but she will know it's me. She'll feel my magical signature!" Bette yelled to both of us.

Suddenly, everything stopped. It was as if someone had pressed a pause button. The abrupt stop had all of us frozen in place for a few moments before we rushed to Goldie. She was still wearing her beautiful dress, with her wings spread out wide, sheltering the man beneath her. My heartbroken mate must have passed out from using so much magic.

"By the stars, is she okay?" Khol rasped, his worry for his newly found daughter clear as day.

My knees hit the ground and I didn't hesitate for a fucking second before pressing myself against her back, embracing her. Her soft snores reassured me that she had indeed passed out from exhaustion. My sweet, sweet Goldie.

"She's asleep," I informed them, giving my girl a tighter squeeze.Fuck, if I ever lost her... No. I can't go there.

"Let's get her back inside. We'll have to call the authorities for Fischer," Bette said somberly.

"Absolutely not. The man was one of Radical's finest and he will have a warrior's farewell," Khol promised. "I will... I’ll make some calls."

I swallowed roughly. Where the fuck were the others? No way in Besmet would they have left their brother behind like this… A chill ran down my spine, my own internal alarm system alerting me to the evil that was still lingering. There was something much larger at play here and I knew we didn’t have all of the pieces.

My arms slipped underneath my woman gently in my attempt not to wake her. I shifted her so she rolled into my arms, her body limp as a ragdoll. As I stood, I heard Khol and Bette both gasp.

"What? Is she bleeding or something?" I asked, panicked. My eyes darted to them, but they weren't looking at Saige. Their eyes were on the ground where Fischer was.

"Holy stars and silly willies..." Bette breathed, holding a hand to her chest.

"What the actual fuck?" Khol's voice rumbled.

Stepping back so that I could see, I looked down and nearly dropped Goldie like a sack of potatoes.

"Are we all tripping right now? Did someone drug us?" I asked as I blinked furiously, my mind slow to catch up with what I was seeing. "Khol! See if he—uh,theyare breathing!" I barked, snapping him out of his daze.

My heart was pounding furiously in my ears as I watched Khol and Bette both move toward the spot I'd just vacated.

"How is this possible?" Khol questioned, his knees hitting the ground, his hands frantically searching for a pulse while Bette did the same across from him.

"Her magic is something uncharted, gentlemen. There's no telling what she's capable of... He's got a pulse, but it's weak!" Bette shouted victoriously.

Khol dropped down onto his ass, his brow furrowed in confusion.
