"Good. The two of you have something in common then," Asrael replied as he stood and headed for the door. "Let's go, I need to prep some paperwork. You can help since Laurie is busy working on Cameron."
Bryce put the file back in the drawer and slammed it shut. The moment they left the room, I sprang into action. Focusing on separating myself from Napoleon, I jumped out of his form and found myself standing where Bryce had been moments prior.
‘What are you doing?’Napoleon asked, leaping down from the shelf.
‘I want to see that file. We need to warn her parents…’I trailed off, thumbing through the mass amounts of names until I found the one I wanted. Scanning the documents quickly, I found that the girl was being raised by her mother, Miranda. They lived in the small town of Emerald Lakes and it appeared the father had bailed when the girl was much younger. Still, Montague knew enough to know his name and his affinity.
‘You should go get your friend away from that she-devil. She's bad news.’Napoleon shivered visibly as he spoke of Laurie.
‘Good point,’I agreed, committing the information to memory and putting the file away.
‘Let's get out of here.’Napoleon jumped onto my shoulder and I all but ran to the door. He was right. None of us needed to be alone with that witch. My gut had told me from the get-go that something was off here and I was right. My vision blurred as I reached for the door handle, my hand landing flat against the knobbly wood to right myself.What the fuck was that?
‘You okay,géant?’Napoleon asked with concern.
‘Aww, you do have a heart,’I teased.‘Yeah, just feels like something is niggling at my mind and it's making me feel weird as fuck. Same thing happened last night when I was trying to sleep, though not as strong…’
‘Like another consciousness?’
Oh my gods. Yes.
‘Napoleon, I need to try something. Will you stand guard outside and let me know if anyone is coming?’
My new little buddy nodded and gave me a salute.‘I shall sound the alarm at the first sign of intruders,’he swore and then he scampered down my body, squeezing underneath the door.
I spun on my heel and stumbled over to the desk, needing to sit down before I fell over. Sweat had started to break out on my forehead and the pressure in my head was increasing. I knew what this was,whothis was... but I didn't want to get my hopes up.
My ass hit the chair just as my legs gave out and I quickly dropped all of my mental shields and barriers.
‘Kai,’Fischer said in my head. His beautifully raspy and deep voice that I never thought I’d hear again filled my soul.
‘Fish…’I breathed, tears springing to my eyes.‘How are you doing this? What the actual fuck is going on? We can’t remember anything. Bagheera is gone, I have a mate! A fucking mate, Fischer. I don’t even know who she is! And we’re at this creepy ass castle by the beach and—’
‘Fuck’s sake, Kai. Shut up and listen, this is taking immense power to reach you like this. I’m with your mate. She’s safe.’
She was safe. My mate was safe. Relief started to settle in until I realized what he’d actually said and red hot jealousy exploded before I could stop it.‘What do you mean, you’re with my mate?’I growled.
‘I’m going to restore your memories. I’m so sorry, K. I did what I had to do… Where are you guys? We’re coming to get you. Like, now. I need as many details as I can get and then you need to fucking haul your ass like it’s on fire and go find Sloane and Cam.’
Fischer sounded nervous and stern. He wasn’t fucking around.
‘We’re in a castle off the coast near Cobalt Shores. It’s Asrael’s, the CEO of Montague Industries. Sloane and Cam are outside, I’ll have to go get them.’
‘This may hurt a little…’
“Motherfucker!” I shouted, clutching my head between my hands as pain exploded. Memories came back rapid-fire with the force of a wrecking ball. “Sprout,” I croaked as I remembered meeting her that first time in her shop. Seeing her with my brothers, how she’d completely infiltrated our crew. When I’d taken her on her kitchen table, rutting into her sweet heat like a beast determined to make her mine.
“Mine…” I panted. “Cub, oh stars… My Cub.”
Everything had gone to shit; we’d betrayed her. Lied. Then Sloane… Bram and Khol had taken her to Besmet. I snarled, unable to hold in my distress.
‘Kai, listen to me. Saige is with me. She is safe. Get your ass outside. Bram and Khol will be there soon to bring you back to us in Emerald Lakes. Trust me. Trust them. There’s no time to explain. Fucking GO!’Fischer shouted and I scrambled to my feet. A familiar roar rang in my head, so loud it felt as if my ears were bleeding from the sheer volume of it.
‘Bagheera!’I called out to my old friend and I saw him in my mind leaping towards me. I embraced his presence and as we collided, I let him take over. Our four massive paws hit the ground smoothly and we didn’t waste a moment, heading for the door.
‘Fuck, I missed you so much, Bagheera.’
He purred in response. Swiping a huge paw at the handle of the door, effectively knocking it off with a clatter as it hit the floor.
