‘Baby girl, I miss you. Your perfect face consumes my mind. How are you feeling, baby? Are the girls treating you okay? Wherever you are, I hope to the stars that you’re being taken care of and that you’re safe. Don’t worry about us, pretty baby. We’ll find a way to get back to you.
‘I was thinking earlier that it’s a good thing I have experience with long hair. I’ll be useful with my skills when the girls’ hair gets longer. Unless they want it short. That’s okay, too. But I can teach the guys how to do it. I expect Faris to do some wild shit with their hair. They’ll love it.
‘My heart aches for you. For my brothers. I’m not giving up though, little witch. I made you a promise that I’d always protect you, love you. I intend to keep it. The devil himself couldn’t stop me from getting to you, baby girl. Just... stay strong for me. For us. I can’t wait to kiss your pouty lips to quiet that sassy mouth. I love you.’
I rolled over onto my side and let sleep drag me under.
A scream hadme flying off the bed. Every nerve in my body buzzed to life. Did I just imagine it? Was I dreaming? I rushed to the door, pressing my ear against it. I hadn’t heard much of anything since I’d been in here. Only when the food tray was delivered did I hear any signs of life.
Just as I was about to turn away, another soul-piercing scream filled the air, and goosebumps broke out along my skin. I knew that scream. It wasn’t human. It was feline.
“KAI!” I roared, pounding my fists against the solid door. Bagheera’s battle cries overtook my senses.Something’s wrong with him.“DON’T YOU FUCKING HURT HIM!”
My heart pounded in time with my fists. Sweat dripped down my face as I gripped the handle of the door and pulled with all my might. It wasn’t budging. Of course it wasn’t.
Then the noise just... stopped. Why has it stopped?Panic overtook me, my hands shaking in fear of what could possibly be happening outside of this godsforsaken cell.
“Kai! It’s Cam! I’m here, brother!” I called out, hoping that he might be able to hear me.They must be keeping him somewhat nearby. How fucked would that be if we were all in cells right next to each other. So close and yet...
The sound of the door bolt being released had me stepping back. As badly as I needed to get out of this cell, I wasn’t stupid. My training was still ingrained in me. I needed to see who was on the other side before I blindly darted out of here and ran into a knife or the barrel of a gun.
“Gods above, it smells awful in here.”
Oh, hell no.
“Hello, Cameron,” Laurie announced, like this was some kind of social visit. Her green eyes darted around the small space, her nose wrinkling in disgust.
I crossed my arms and glared at her, noting the door was now closed. That’s fine. They’ll have to open it to let her out.
When I didn’t speak, irritation flitted across her face. “What? No greeting for me? We’re practically family now, you know. I wanted to tell you—no hard feelings. If you’d like, you can call me Mom. I know you don’t have one.”
Jesus. This cunt.
I stared at her, my face unmoving. People like her wanted reactions. Drama. Nothing pissed them off more than not reacting to their mind games.
“What? No questions for me? Nothing that you’re just dying to know?”
The questions were burning my tongue with how badly I wanted to spit them out, but I knew she wouldn’t answer them. Laurie was a bitch of the worst kind. She shrugged in a suit-yourself kind of way and studied me. I would bet money her magic was completely fine, which was the only thing stopping me from lunging forward and snapping her neck.
“You really need a shower. Come on.” She walked to the door and pulled it open, disappearing from the cell.Is she serious right now?The door remained cracked. “Let’s go, Jacobs. You seriously stink.”
I bit the inside of my cheek and cautiously approached the door, stepping out into a dimly lit hallway. This was the first time in a very long time I’d seen anything aside from the inside of that damn room. My eyes took in everything. There were doors that ran the length of the hall, doors that matched mine. More cells. Where was Kai?
Breathing the air out here was such a rush that I nearly felt a burst of euphoria as I trailed behind Laurie. She’d glance back every so often to make sure I was still there. I needed to get my thoughts together. It was risky to go off half-cocked without knowing where I was and without having some kind of plan. But if I had a clear shot to take this bitch out, I wouldn’t hesitate.
We approached an archway, and I noted the cement floor giving way to tiles.Guess the bitch really is taking me to a shower. Here I was, dressed in a pair of boxer briefs I’d been wearing since the day we fucking got here, and she was prancing around like Queen Cunt in a power suit. The clacking of her heels on the smooth floor made my eye twitch, and I had to clench my fists until my knuckles cracked to restrain myself from ripping her head off.
As it was, I had no clue where I was. Obviously Besmet... but where in Besmet? Still in the castle? Or had I been relocated somewhere? I knew I’d heard Kai earlier, so he was here with me. But for all I knew at this moment, everyone else could be in another realm, the next room, or in a damn grave. I was flying blind, so I tamped down my rage.
“There are towels for you on the bench. Soap and other products are in the shower. No razor. You can understand why,” Laurie explained smugly, her heels echoing in the shower room. There were maybe five separate stalls, with a long wooden bench that ran the length of the room, reminding me of a pool locker room.
I eyed her suspiciously as I came to a standstill. What angle was she playing here? The showers didn’t have curtains, and there wasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell I was stripping down in front of this woman.
“No need to be shy, Cameron.” She winked. I didn’t move. “I’ve already seen what you have under there. You have some pretty metal, but you’re not a robot, are you? No, you’re all man.” Fuck, I had to swallow to prevent myself from gagging. “Don’t worry, I’ll be waiting right outside for you to finish. That’s the only exit from this room and there’s absolutely nothing in here that could double as a weapon, so don’t bother.” She spun and left the room.
This was the problem with being held as a prisoner. Especially during a war. Nothing was ever done without reason. So why now, after so many weeks, was I being let out of that cell? And right after I’d heard Kai? Maybe they wanted to finally talk to me, instead of ignoring me completely.
Not wasting any time, I stepped into the shower stall, turning the water onto the hottest setting. My boxers hit the cool floor, and I fucking groaned when the water pelted my skin. Holding my head beneath the spray, I let the heat and moisture wash the initial layer of grime from my body.
