I lifted a brow at the hint of what sounded like disgust in her tone—something to explore later. We stepped into the elevator, and I hit the button for the underground garage.
She shifted from one foot to the other. “Are we going to talk about last night?”
I grinned. “I’m happy to talk about last night, love. Fucking brilliant night.”
The doors slid open, and I could feel her glaring at my back as I stepped out into the cool garage. “That’s not what I meant and you know it.”
“We can talk about whatever you want to talk about.” I spun around and held a finger to her lips, cutting off her words. ”Afterwe get in the car and on our way.”
Her eyes narrowed as she stared up at me, and I felt my dick waking up. My eyes dipped to her slender throat, making me wonder how sexy she’d look with a collar… My hand trailed from her mouth, alongside her jaw, and down to her neck. So dainty.
“Ash,” she breathed, and my gaze snapped to hers. I reluctantly released her throat from my grasp.
I swallowed roughly and silently counted to five. I needed to calm down or I was going to demon out right here and fuck her in my natural form on top of the nearest vehicle. “Come on.” I turned away from her, walking hastily to my vintage Aston Martin DB4. I hit the unlock button and the car beeped, the lights flashing. Thank the stars for technological upgrades.
Opening the passenger door, I waited for her to slide in. Once she was inside, I closed her door and slowly made my way to the driver’s side. There was something about her scent this morning… It was driving me insane. It was driving you insane last night, too.I got in and fired up the engine.
“Where are we going?”
I chanced a look and found her scanning the garage. Thank fuck she couldn’t tell how on edge I was. “To the docks,” I answered, pulling the car out of the underground garage and onto a fairly vacant street.
It wasn’t quite noon yet, but the sun was shining. For now. That was the thing about living in Port Black—the weather changed frequently. It was often raining and gray, which explained the vacant streets. People would probably be down at the beach, enjoying the sunshine while it lasted.
“What are you?” Palmer blurted out ten seconds into our drive.
I shifted and tossed her a look. “What do you think I am?”
“A monster.”
I chuckled. “I’m not going to argue that one, but no, little rabbit. I’m a demon. So are my boys, as you saw.”
“I didn’t know demons existed,” she replied, studying my profile closely, like I was going to shift and corrupt her any second now.
“And what? Only your kind is able to exist?”
She slowly turned in her seat to face me. “My kind?”
“Oh please, I know you’re not human. You’re a witch. I’m just not clear on what your affinity is.”
There were witches and mages, and each of them was gifted with an affinity. A specific type of magic exclusive to their person. There were so many different types, but sometimes I was able to smell what kind of magic a witch was capable of. Fire, for example. Or water.
Whatever magic Palmer had, it was one I hadn’t run into before—and that was saying a lot. It reminded me of the way the earth smelled during autumn: decaying leaves, damp earth, and crisp air. While I wasn’t a fan of smelling anything that I’d typically describe as decaying, her magical scent almost felt… cozy. Calming.
“Alright, I’m a witch, yes. Am I in danger when you’re… a demon?”
“Yes.” We reached the docks, and I pulled up to the security building, killing the engine. Reaching over, I took her hand. “But love, I’m always a demon.” With a grin, I kissed her knuckles.
“So I’m not safe with you?”
“I highly doubt you’d find somewhere safer to be than surrounded by five ruthless demons. Now, let’s head inside. I have a few things to take care of before we go find Felix.”
She groaned. “You’re confusing.”
I shrugged. I could accept that. We got out of the car, and I led the way to a large open garage door.
“Wait!” Palmer suddenly shouted, and I cringed, turning slowly to face her with my ear ringing. “Sorry, I got excited. Forgot how close you were to me. But I have some more questions before we go in there.” She blinked up at me, and damn it all to hell, I’d give her whatever she fucking wanted if as long as she kept those deep blue eyes on me at all times.
“Go on then,” I said slowly, wondering if I was going to regret this.
