“And what about Rhodes’s theories? Why did she hide it?” Ash asked quietly.
I let him go and shrugged. “Aren’t we all hiding things? Have we known her long enough to be demanding all of her truths? What if she wanted the same from us?”
He was quiet, staring down at our girl. “Let’s just hope this was the biggest secret she has. She already knows our biggest one.”
“What? That we’re demons? Nah, that’s just our biggest secret from society. It’s different from our own personal secrets.”
Suddenly, Misha’s eyes flew open and he reached out for Palmer, grabbing her just as her eyes flew open and a scream tore out of her body that was so awful, it hurt my bones.
“Shh,kukola, shhh. You’re safe. You’re safe.” Ashland and I stared at each other with matching serious expressions while Misha stroked Palmer’s hair.
Swift footfalls alerted us that Felix was incoming, likely having heard that horrible noise she’d made. “What the fuck is happening?!” he bellowed, sliding into the kitchen in only basketball shorts, aside from his leathery black wings.
“I’m not exactly sure,” Ash said slowly, eyeing Misha and Palmer.
That seemed to snap her out of whatever mental episode she was having, because she pushed away from Misha and sat up with a groan. “I’m fine. Bad dream.” She chuckled, then winced in pain. Misha looked like he was clenching his jaw so hard, he was in danger of breaking his teeth. “Wow, I feel like I got hit by a truck.”
“Are you serious right now, love? That’s all you have to say?” Ash crossed his arms and leaned against the counter, staring her down.
Felix came closer and stood before her. “You’re hurt, babe. Let them look at your injuries. You were fucking unconscious.”
She waved her hand. “No, I was just sleeping. I think you’re all blowing this out of proportion.”
Hmm. Now I was getting a teensy bit pissed. Misha audibly scoffed. Our Bun-Bun had no idea how thin the ice was, and she was stomping around without giving a thought to the danger.
“Sleeping, she says,” Ashland mocked. “Pull up your shirt and look at your bruising. You have a gash along your hairline that needs stitching, for fuck’s sake. Blowing it out of proportion, my fucking ass.”
She lifted her shirt and patted her flat tummy. “Looks fine to me.” We all looked. There was very minimal bruising, and it appeared to be lightening up with each passing second. “Thanks for getting me back here safely. As you can see, I’m good. I just need a shower and bed.”
The little bitch actually slid off the island and then stretched, reaching her arms up as high as they could go. I watched as her eyes caught a glimpse of something in Misha’s front pocket, and she reached out to snatch her bunny blades, sighing contentedly.
We all eyed each other for a second, then everyone moved. Palmer screeched as Ashland grabbed her, locking her arms against her torso. Kicking, she tried to headbutt him. She might have been able to fight like a demon, but she wasn’t strong like one.
“What the hell are youdoing?” she demanded, turning her fiery stare on me as Misha wrestled the blades from her pinned hand.
“What arewedoing? Listen, Bun-Bun, I’m not sure if you cracked your head too hard in that ring tonight, but you’re acting like a complete asshole with a dash of delusional on top of that hot mess sundae.”
Felix bent down and grabbed her ankles, suspending her between him and Ash as they walked through the apartment. Misha and I followed closely behind.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Talon! Where are you taking me?”
“It’s the fact that you are still lying to our faces that really astounds me, Bun-Bun. You had some wicked injuries that are now magically healed. You have fighting skills that rival ours, and you didn’t say shit about that, ever. In fact, you didn’t eventryto escape us in the maze, did you?” I pushed, my tone taking on an angry edge.
I wanted answers right the fuck now.
They carried her up the stairs, and Ash directed us to his room. He had the right kind of... tools for this. I’d talked him down from this earlier, but that’d been before she’d gone all Nurse Nightingale on her own body.
“Since you’re fine and everything, you won’t object to a little game?” Ash asked darkly.
“You’re all dicks. All of you. What’s wrong? Feeling intimidated now that I beat Monocle? You want to put me in my place, is that it?”
Felix laughed. “Damn, you really come up with some hurtful shit sometimes. Who hurt you, baby?”
Misha snarled and pushed everyone out of his way so he could open the doors to Ash’s space. Something had him ready to go feral for the second time in one night. What the actual fuck is going on? Are we becoming werewolves? Is it a full moon?I only liked to pretend to be a dog sometimes—usually when I was getting railed at the same time—but I didn’t really want to be one.
“We’re not turning into gods damned werewolves!” Felix snapped at me, picking up my thoughts. I leaned in and bit his shoulder. “Ow! The fuck?”
“Well, first of all, I didn’t like your tone. Secondly, if I’m a werewolf, now you are too. That’s how it works. Read a fucking book, Lixy.”
