Balor cleared his throat and looked at each of us. The very air around us seemed to thicken in anticipation. "Well, there is some news that I haven't been able to share yet."

"Don't just stand there and stare at us, Balor. Fill us in," Talon demanded, wringing his hands together.

"I haven't been able to keep in touch as much as of late... and there's a good reason for that. I'm just not sure how to explain..."

 Misha growled, low and deep.

Balor got right to the point. "The King is dead. Asrael has taken over, and nobody is quite sure when it happened because he was using the King's body. There was a prophecy regarding a witch and her mates..."

I rolled my eyes. "What the bloody hell does this have to do with anything?"

Balor raised his hand, silencing me. "The prophecy is real. There is a green witch named Saige, and the prophecy is about her. She is the reason I've been unable to contact you."

Felix's brows pinched in thought. "So, this witch... she's an enemy? She's been holding you captive? Is she working with Asrael?"

"Gods, no," Balor exclaimed. "Quite the opposite. She's been under my care for the past month. She's pregnant. With twins."

The five of us looked between each other, curious as to why this was such a big deal.

“And we give a fuck… why?” Rhodes crossed his arms, the muscles in his forearms rippling with the movement. We were all beefed up in our natural, demonic forms. I loved it.

Balor glanced at Rhodes in exasperation. "She's with the Crown Prince, Bram Carlisle."

My mind was racing as I processed the information. My mind felt like it was imploding a bit. "So you mean to tell us that Bram, ademon, impregnated awitch?"

"Well, to my understanding, only one of the children is his..."

"But she's a witch. There's no way that's possible. Khol tried that—" Rhodes murmured as his mind tried to catch up.

I growled and was chest to chest with Rhodes in a flash, earning a snarl from him. "Do NOT speak that fucking name in my presence."

Balor inserted himself between the two of us and pushed me back. Flashes of the past were firing rapidly through my brain, memories best left forgotten. "Tell me you didn't think you'd come here and avoid him? He's—"

"ENOUGH!" I bellowed, taking a deep breath. "Continue with the damn story!"

"Fine, fine," Balor agreed, walking over to a fallen tree trunk. "Prepare yourself then, and for the sake of the stars, controlyour anger. I wouldn't mention anything that isn't prudent to the story."

I paced back and forth. For years, I'd pushed away all thoughts of Khol The Merciless. Khol The Cold. Khol, the fucking killer. The liar.

"Continue, friend," Felix said, taking a seat beside Balor.

"Saige, the witch... she's a good woman. Genuine and sincere. But she is a threat to Asrael because the prophecy essentially states that she will be the one to save Besmet. He's going to do everything he can to eliminate her—"

"And Bram? I feel like we would’ve heard if he’d killed him?" Talon questioned, looking concerned. We’d all spent time with Bram at one point or another throughout our time growing up in Besmet, especially when we were at the castle.

"Bram and Khol have been sentenced to public execution," Balor said heavily.

Khol has been sentenced to death?I ignored the way my heart skipped a beat.

Misha shifted on his large feet, widening his stance. “Well, I think the fuck not.”

"Where is this witch now?" Rhodes asked, looking more concerned than I'd have expected from the usually emotionless demon.

Balor grinned. "Escaped. Her dragon-shifter mate assisted in rescuing her. She quite literally dove through one of the upper-floor windows of the castle, narrowly escaping assault at the hands of Asrael! The entire castle is talking about it nonstop."

"Good for her. Just another reason to kill that son of a bitch," Felix said, his tone dripping with venom. We'd never allowed innocent women to be harmed; it was one of the only absolute hard limits we had. When the bar was that low, though, it didn't make us 'good guys'. We knew who we were. Monsters.

“Dragon-shifter mate? And a demon mate? What the absolute fuckery is going on over here?” Talon interjected.
