“Ding ding ding.” I turn, and Faye has cut a piece off the corner of my sheet.

“That’s my favorite sheet.” I snatch it away so she can’t get any more snip happy with it.

“Soon, you’ll have a quilt to cherish.”

I point at her. “I hope there’s come all over that.”

Faye’s nose curls up in disgust. “I’ll remember that next time.”

“Yeah, you do that,” I snarl.

“I better have a shower,” Silver says. “And get ready for a week of being shoved together with you, Els.” He disappears into my bathroom.

 “Ladies, out!” I shout.

The door opens, and he pops his head out. “Unless you’d like to join me.”

 Chapter Ten

 SILVER

 ––––––––

“NOPE, GO AWAY.” ELSIErolls a three-tiered cart filled with painting supplies into the living room.

“Can we talk?” I follow her like a lost puppy. Truthfully, I feel like a lost puppy without her.

“No. Today is my relaxing day to paint, and I don’t need you disrupting it.” She rips a plastic bag and shakes open a drop cloth.

“Courage is being scared to death and then saddling up anyway.” Grumpy Wayne sits comfortably on the overstuffed chair. I see he hasn’t stopped quoting John Wayne in every conversation.

“We all heard you two got it on.” Rita twists a tap on the side of her purse, and a stream of alcohol pours into Grumpy Wayne’s flask.

“No one is scared here.” Elsie lightly smacks Grumpy Wayne’s arm. “Get up.”

When he grumpily stands, she positions the clear plastic cover over the chair to save it from possible paint splatters.
