Chapter Thirteen

 ELSIE

INERVOUSLY RUB MYbelly in the waiting room of the local clinic. The old Victorian house converted isn’t anything like the big city hospitals back home.

I’ve been excited about this appointment for weeks, but now being wedged between the Wilde brothers, I can hardly think of anything else. Neither of them is making it easy.

“Why don’t you go wait in the truck,” Sammy growls, running his fingers up and down the rim of the Stetson resting on his lap.

“I’m not going anywhere.” Silver’s more casual and cocky and, if I guessed, rather enjoying Sammy’s anger at finding us banging.

“I’ll believe it when I see it.”

“Now is not the time,” I whisper, smiling at the young receptionist.

“You plan to throw me out again?” Silver cracks his knuckles and stretches his arms over his lap. He also has his feet stretched out and crossed at the ankle.

“You’ll leave all on your own,” Sammy accuses.

My heart thuds through my chest. “Can we save this for later?”

“I don’t even know why he came,” Sammy mutters.

“This kid might be yours, but I want to be a part of its life.”

 Sammy scoffs. “Until you don’t.”

 “What does that mean?”

 “You’ll get bored.”

“I’m bored of this repeating argument!” I shout, then quickly apologize to the receptionist. “It’s clear the three of us need to sit down and talk about how we are moving forward.”

Sammy’s tightened jaw doesn’t even relax. I’ve never seen him so angry. “I think the solution starts with you two not jumping in the sack like rabbits whenever you’re alone.”

My eyes fly to the receptionist. She’s quick to divert her eyes, but there’s no pretending she didn’t hear. The waiting room is too small and too quiet not to overhear.

“What the fuck are you so afraid of?” Silver drags his legs up and leans his elbows on his knee to look at Sammy.
