Chapter Four
SILVER
––––––––
SAMMY, THE PLEASER, the giver, the selfless lover—my ass.
I’m the pleasing lover, the giving lover, the selfless lover. I leave women satisfied and still wanting more. I mean, up until Elsie took off, she couldn’t resist any opportunity to banglefuck.
What am I missing?
Is she sleeping with him behind my back, the way we’ve been banging behind Sammy’s back?
Well, shit.
How the hell did I miss that?
More importantly, why the hell do I care?
“Get up here.” My ma waves at me.
Two hours after wrangling in the cattle, the town is still ready for a baby-daddy reveal.
“I’d rather not.” I lift my beer to my lips as my pa digs his fingers into my shoulders.
“Get up there, son.” His stern husky voice is in my ear. “You did the deed; you suffer through the awkward embarrassment.”
Aw, shit.
“Thanks, Pa.”
He gives me a solid shove and claps as I stalk to the head of the tent.
Sammy and Elsie stand on one side of a ten-foot-long cardboard box—the big reveal. It’s painted white with my name distastefully written above my brothers. Question marks sit at the end of each name. I’ve attended a helluva lot of unconventional parties, but nothing quite this ridiculous.
I stand beside my ma on the opposite side of Sammy and Elsie. She hands me a pair of paddles. One has my name, and the other has my brother’s name.
“Welcome to the Wilde baby-daddy reveal.” The sun hits the giant chrome scissors Wilma holds.
“There’s quite a crowd today.” Faye nearly jumps out of her pink cowboy boots as she squeezes a second pair of scissors.
“Who doesn’t love a good gamble.” I raise the paddle with my brother’s name. “Who bet on Sammy?”
