Lena picks up a tea towel with a square shape cut out. “I figured as much.”

“They’re never wrong.”

“So they claim.”

“Neither of us knows what to do or what it means, so we’ve decided to be friends for the next five days. No sex. To see if we actually like each other.” I sigh loudly. “I messed up, and even if we decide we’re in love...he’ll never forgive me and Sammy.”

My sister remains quiet.

“Lena?”

“Yes?”

“Motherly advice, please. Or, at the very least, some best friend/sisterly rom-com advice from your books.”

She smiles, calm and collected. “You’re spending five days together to discover what the feelings between you mean. You and Sammy need to have a conversation that won’t happen before that. My sisterly advice to you is to give these five days everything you have. Don’t hold back because of a decision you’ve already made and can’t change right now. Spend time with him and see where it leads.”

“It’s going to lead to banglefucking all over this ranch.”

“And maybe you two are only bang-buddies. Or maybe he makes you laugh, and he enjoys your sense of humor. Maybe you’ll discover you share a deeper connection, and this week will offer opportunities to open up and share your deepest secrets.”

I nod, but I don’t know how I can continue keeping the truth from him.

The back door bursts open, and Wheeler runs inside. “We need a first aid kit!”

“HOW YOU FEELIN’ GRUMPYWayne?” My brother Beck checks the bandage taped on the older man’s chin.

“I won’t be wronged. I won’t be insulted. And I won’t be laid a hand on. I don’t do these things to other people”—Grumpy Wayne glowers at Rita—”and I require the same from them.”

Rita snorts. “Calm down, GW. I can’t be the first person to lasso you. And if I am, you’re hanging out with the wrong people.”
