“Do you really want to go in there or do you want to get out of here?”

Jenna didn’t even hesitate. “Get out of here.”

He took her hand. “Come on.” He reached into his suit jacket pocket to get their prom tickets and her coat check ticket. He placed their prom tickets on the round table. “Just in case someone forgot theirs,” he winked. Then they headed over to the counter to get her coat back. “Let’s go.”

CHAPTER 20

Jack followed Jenna’s directions to get them to Discovery Park. In less than an hour they were inside the hotel room, the sun had nearly set and the final rays were vanishing along the horizon as they pulled into the park.

Jenna shook her head. “I don’t even know why I wanted to go to prom. It’s so silly now.”

Jack turned in his seat to face her. “It wasn’t silly, baby. You had as much of a right to be there as any other of your classmates.”

“So did you,” she reminded him.

“Wanna know a secret?”

She turned in her seat to face him too. “I want to know all of your secrets.”

Jack smiled, because he was fairly certain he didn’t have any others from her. “I’d much rather have a prom with just you and me than a crowded ballroom anyway.”

“Yeah?”

He nodded. “Yeah.” He reached for the truck’s radio and flipped it on then raised the volume. “Lower your window,” he instructed as he cranked his down.

They were parked under a streetlamp facing the water. Since theyhad a hotel room booked for the weekend, Jack did not intend to make love to her here and it was safer to be under the light in the park at night.

Jack hopped out, coming around to her door. He scowled when he saw she was taking off her jacket. “Baby…”

“Don’t ‘baby’ me,” she argued. “This is my prom and I don’t want my dress covered.”

He held his hand out for her. “I just don’t want you to get cold.”

Jenna exited the truck, moving out of the way so he could close the door. “Then you best keep me close and warm.”

Taking her hand, they went to the bed of the truck where he lowered the tailgate. Hands on her waist, Jack lifted her into the bed before jumping up himself. “Keeping you close is the easy part,” he told her, snagging her around the waist. “Keeping your clothesonis the hard part.”

Jenna laughed, “You rascal!”

He spun her out, making her skirt billow around her. His Jenna had no rhythm whatsoever but he loved dancing with her anyway. He tugged her back to him. She tripped, landing heavily against his chest. He took her weight easily and locked his arm around her waist to hold her securely against him.

“You know exactly who and what I am, Jenna Scanlon, and you love me anyway.”

“I do,” she nodded. “With all my heart, Jack.”

One of Jenna’s favorite songs,Heavenby Bryan Adams, came on the radio. Jack started to sway to the music, completely ignoring his girl’s two left feet as she tried to follow along.

“People search their entire lives for someone to share it with. Some find it while others don’t. Some think they found it but were mistaken. Then there are those who settle because they think they aren’t worthy of finding it. But you, my beautiful Jenna…” Jack shook his head. “I wasn’t even looking for you and yet you found me anyway. And in twenty-five days, I get to make you Mrs. Jack Duncan.”

“And you’ll be Mr. Jenna Duncan,” she countered with a crooked smile.

“I’ll be sure to have that monogrammed on all my shirts.”

“You were right, you know.”

“I usually am.” His smile was playfully smug. “But what about specifically this time?”

“I would have been really self-conscious dancing in front of everyone at prom. This is much better.”
