Trevor and Abby stood with Ashley, closer than ever before. Those two surprised me the most in these past few months. After seeing Ashley clinging to life in the hospital, Trev decided to make some changes in his life, one being his lifestyle. He and Abby have been seeing each other for three months now and seem to be really happy. Who would have thought the gay friend and the awkward white girl of the group would end up together?
“How are you feeling, Mama?” I pulled Janelle into my arms. Dressed in her custom-made safari dress and headband, I tightened my arms around her. Seeing her happy made my heart smile. “You’re so pretty, baby.”
“I feel like a whale.” She pouted, popping a piece of cake into her mouth. “I love our little boy, but I will be so glad when I can have my body back.”
Kissing her nose, I pulled her into my arms, hugging her tightly. We went through a trivial phase, breaking up for no reason, but I’m so glad we made things right. I don’t know what led up to our split, but I knew I didn’t want to spend my life without her. When I found out she was pregnant with my son, I dragged her to Barbados and made her my wife. My condo no longer felt like home, so I sold it. There was a pestering energy within those walls that made me not want to have my girl or son there. I was living with her until I was able to purchase a beautiful home for us in Mills Manor, which should be soon because business was booming.
“You two look so damn cute!” Abby said in a giddy voice once she and the crew walked over. Trevor was stuck to her side like glue. “I just can’t believe Sabrena isn’t here to see this.”
Upon hearing her name, I couldn’t make sense of the anger that coursed through my veins. It’s been months since we’ve seen or heard from her, but the mention of her name makes me want to vomit.
Janelle,
I hope this letter finds you well, as it will be the last time you’ll hear from me. I wanted to say that while I loved you, I was never genuine when it came to our friendship. I preyed on you, and I was jealous of all the amazing things you are. I’ve dreamed of having your life, down to the man you lie with. Seeing you with him kills me, so I must stay away, but I know the love you have for each other is real. As much as I wanted him to see me as he did you, I knew it would never happen. I’m sorry if it hurts you to know my truth. I’ve made my bed of misery, and I have to lie in it now. Blessings to you both.
Sabrena
When Janelle told me about the bullshit-ass letter, I wanted to find Sabrena and beat her ass. I would never see her the way she saw me. She was my wife’s best friend, so ultimately, she was like a sister. I never presented anything to her other than us being friends, so her whole confession baffled me. I didn’t know what type of sick-ass time she was on, but it was best that she had left Milly Grove.
There had been one downside in life since being back with Janelle. I’ve been having the most chilling nightmares. I wouldn’t admit to the dreams because I didn’t want to worry or scare my wife. The dreams are so vivid that I wake up soaking in sweat and panting to catch my breath. The shadowy figures with glowing, yellow eyes come and go, and the terror they cause leaves me with haunting feelings during the day. They whisper my name, sounding alive and real, and each time, I’m jolting from my sleep. I hold my wife tighter, using her as my anchor to reality, telling myself it’s all in my head. Eventually, I’ll see someone for help, but right now, Janelle and her having a healthy baby boy are my only concerns.
Janelle hissed, sipping her punch. “Fuck Sabrena! She'd better be glad she burned her house down and left in time. I’d go over there and beat—Ahh!”
Getting the attention of our guests with her yelps, she looked to me with scared eyes as she held onto the bottom of her round belly. Dragging my eyes lower, I saw the puddle of fluids surrounding both our feet.
“Come on, baby girl.” I scooped her into my arms without a second thought. “Let’s get you to the hospital.”
With Abby and Trevor telling us they would clean the venue and meet us there, Ash and I did the dash, getting my wife to my truck and across town. I kept stealing glances at the ladies in the back as I whipped my new Ford F-150 truck through the city. I may have been playing it cool on the outside, but inside, I was shitting bricks.
“We need help!” I shouted as soon as I had her out of the car and into the delivery room. “My wife is in labor!”
Springing into action, I watched as the nurses from labor and delivery swooped into action to get my girl prepped to deliver our son. While they got her situated in the room, one of thenurses helped me into scrubs as well. Suited and masked up, I was ready to help bring my son into this world.
“You’re doing great, baby.” I held a crying Janelle’s hand as she damn near broke my fingers. “I don’t think I’ve ever loved you as much as I do now.”
Smiling as best as she could, she squeezed her eyes shut, pushing as hard as she could per the doctor’s instructions. Prying my fingers from her, I peeked over her gown just as my son was crowning.
“One more push, Mama!” I shouted excitedly. “He’s almost here!”
Bearing down on the bedrails as hard as she could, she gave me one last push, causing the sweetest sound to fill the room.
Waaa! Waaa!
“It’s a beautiful, baby boy!” one of the nurses exclaimed. “Here, cut this so we can give him to Mama.”
Doing as I was told, I cried tears of joy as I cut the umbilical cord. My son, DJ, was finally here. My world was now more complete than it had ever been. Covered in blood and fluid, I smiled as my wailing baby boy was placed securely on his mother’s chest.
“He’s perfect,” Janelle cried, kissing his forehead, not caring about the mess. “He looks just like you.”
Giving us a few moments with him, I held on to his little fingers as his mother rocked him. I watched him calm down at the soothing sounds of her voice. She was drained, and I knew she wanted to rest. Now that our baby was here, she could.
Watching her doze off, I beamed down at them both. They were my hearts in human form, and I couldn’t have been more blessed. As I bent over to kiss them both, his eyes slowly opened, causing me to falter and gasp.
His eyes, opened wide and bright, had a golden glow. Not only did that scare me, but so did the shadows that danced inside his pupils.
“Sir, what’s wrong?” A nurse ran over instantly, causing Janelle to awaken. “Are you okay?”
Dragging my eyes to Janelle, I slowly pointed at my son, causing her to shift her eyes down to him. She frowned in confusion as she peered up at me.
