“No worries.” She turns back to Lucas, giving him a quick hug. “Let Nicole know I said hey.”
“Will do. Good to see you Poppy,” He says to her before we leave.
On the drive home, I sit in silence, half listening to the guys while I’m on my phone.
I’m messaging with the therapist, I actually manage to book an appointment this week.
I seriously need it.
I overhear part of the boys conversation.
“So how do you know that nurse—Poppy?” Tyler asks.
“She’s Nicole’s best friend.” Lucas Replies.
“Oh that makes sense. She said she knew Sean from school?”
“Yeah, he was in the same grade as Nicole and her.” Lucas nods.
I don’t say anything, I just mindlessly scroll through my phone until we’re back home.
My phone vibrates in my hand as we pull up.
Sarah: Sorry I don’t mean to bother you today. But I wanted to let you know Louise came in this morning to work. Rhonda and her had a meetingout the back and she was doing clients. I thought you should know. How is Sean, how are you? Xo
Louise? Working?
I exhale slowly, something feels off about that. I text her back before getting out of the car.
Me: No real updates yet. I’m okay. Thanks for the heads-up. I’m curious what’s going on there. I am coming in tomorrow to let Rhonda know my plans. Will let you know if I hear anything about Sean.

My favourite people
When we get home, Danielle is standing out the front. She runs up to me and gives me a hug as I get out of the car.
“Fuck. I’m sorry, Cammie. I hate the guy, but I wouldn’t wish this on him. How was he?” I assume Tyler filled her in. I really need my bestie around.
“Still the same. The receptionist will call if anything changes. I know I shouldn’t care, but I do. I’m just so worried.” Lucas puts a hand on my shoulder in comfort.
We all head inside and sit down to have dinner together, left overs from last night. I try to push everything about Sean to the back of my mind and focus on my people.
“With everything going on, I didn’t get to tell you, Dani… I’m opening up my own salon.” I try my best to pull off a real smile. It’s hard when the guilt and worry about Sean keeps tricking through my thoughts.
“No freaking way! Cammie! That’s amazing! You’ve always wanted to! Where?”
“It’s the cutest little building across from the bay, on the main esplanade. It’s actually Lucas’s building. He’s almost finished fixing it up.” I look to Lucas who gives me a supportive smile.
“Wow, that’s amazing! I’m so happy for you. What’s the name?” she asks.
“I’m thinkingWaves by the Sea.”
“Uh, I love it! Perfect hair pun—and you’re literally going to makewavesby the sea. When will you open?”
“Well, I still need to quit. I’m going to tell Rhonda tomorrow. The furniture should arrive by the end of the week, so we could open soon, maybe in a week or two? When do you think Lucas?” My eyes move to him again for more reassurance.
“Honestly? I’ll be done by the end of the week. I have the last of the trades in this week. If you’re ready to open, we’ll be ready too.” My smile widens slightly. I still can’t believe it’s really happening. Then guilt hits me again like a bucket of water. This is all happening while Sean is fighting for his life. My smile fades, and I change the subject.
