I caught myself before I could retort, “prove it,”biting my tongue. I didn’t know this man. He might be saving me now, but for all I knew, he worked for one of the Mexican cartels and was going to use me as a mule. “It wasn’t a normal lizard. It looked like some kind of prehistoric monster.”
“Maybe you found Chupacabra.”
“I don’t think Chupacabra are that big. This thing was Godzilla huge.”
“Well, no wonder you were terrified. I’m lucky I found you in one piece.” In the dark, I tripped on a root, and he scooped me up against his chest without even breaking stride. “I got you.”
“How far is your cabin? You can’t carry me too long.”
He glanced down at me, the hard planes of his face illuminated by a flash of moonlight. He didn’t have any hair. Like none whatsoever. Not even stubble. But his lips.Guh.That full, sensual bottom lip just begged to be sucked on. No, I wanted to dig my teeth into that delectable lip and hold on for dear life while he fucked me blind.
The thought stunned me. Literally wiped my brain of all function.
I must have fallen and hit my head. Hard. Or I was going into shock.
He shifted me higher in his arms, and it felt natural to tuck my face against the strong column of his throat. His scent washed over me, a deep, rich musk that I recognized immediately because it was so strange and foreign.
Monster.
Oh fuck. No way.
My heart jolted. I stiffened.
The giant lizard thing had that same distinctive odor. Not bad, exactly, but strong and overwhelming. It made me lightheaded and scared spitless at the same time.
He rubbed his cheek against the top of my head and a low soothing rumble rolled from deep within his chest. “Don’t be afraid, Natalie. I won’t hurt you.”
KROKTL
Scent.That’s how she’d known I was close.
I’d never known a human to be able to smell so well, but that was just another reason she was meant for me. I simply had to convince her of that fact before anyone came looking for her. I’d do whatever it took to keep her, but I was afraid the second I put her back down on her own two feet that she’d take off again.
Without setting her down, I shifted her in my arms enough to get the door to my cabin open. I really wanted to drop her on my bed and ensure she got a real good taste of what I was offering before her justifiable doubts and fears could take over, but she squirmed in my arms. With a sigh, I set her down and made myself let go of her completely.
I flipped on the light so she could see. The cabin hadn’t been much to speak of when I’d claimed it. Deep in the jungle, secluded from all signs of civilization, it was the perfect hideout. The previous owner had rigged up basic but functional indoor plumbing by piping in water. The kitchen was comprised of a two-burner hot plate, a coffee pot, a mini fridge—mostly filled with mediocre beer—and a tiny section of cabinets. Mostly empty. I didn’t cook much. Dyni preferred fresh, hot blood and still-kicking meat.
Fuck. I can’t even feed her anything but candy bars and coffee.
She made an odd choking sound that brought my attention back to her in a rush.
Mouth open, she stared at me like she’d die if she looked away. Eyes locked on my cock, she licked her lips, and I almost shot my load then and there.
I’d been painfully erect for weeks, whichever form I took. Aching, sweating, mercilessly driven by hormones to hunt for an elusive female and breed. Hard. A simple hand job only made the need worse. I’d endured heat cycles before but nothing like this one, made so much worse by the distinct lack of compatible females on this worthless planet.
Let alone a fuckingmate. A true mate I’d kill anything and anyone to keep.
I shifted my hips forward, putting my erection on full display to let her drink her fill. Hopefully she wasn’t scared off. I wasn’t sure how anatomically different I might be from human males. It’d work. I’d make it work. It’d be so fucking good she’d never even think of another male ever again.
Fuck, she smelled good. Her lush scent drove me mad—but also curiously put the dynos at ease. Urgency still hammered through my veins, but I didn’t fear the predator would rip out to attack her. In fact, I was pretty sure the fucking beast would flip over on its back and invite a belly rub as soon as she touched me.
She made another soft sound and dragged her gaze up my chest. Tons of scars from bullet wounds, claw marks, and knives, you name it—over shredded muscle. I’d been bred for warfare. Engineered to be the biggest, baddest soldier of the galaxy.
When she finally met my gaze, her eyes were so soft and dazed that I couldn’t stifle a low growl.Yeah, baby. This is all for you.
Making myself move slowly so I didn’t scare her again, I pulled a chilled bottle of water from the fridge. I handed it to her, making sure our fingers brushed. “Drink it slowly, baby. You’re probably dehydrated, and it’ll make you sick if you drink too fast.”
“I’m not your baby,” she said it automatically, as though it was something she’d been forced to say a lot to someone.
