“I agree. We’re a good team.”
Danny grinned. “You might be right there.”
Danny sat in the back yard. He sipped his tea and enjoyed the peace.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Tyler’s nervous and stunning face.
Grow the fuck up.
“Was your day as bad as you expected?”
I managed about ten seconds on my own. A personal best in this house.
Andy came out and sat across the plastic table from Danny. He had a beer in his hand.
“Bit mean to come out with only one.”
“You’ve got tea.”
“I can drink two things.”
Andy sighed and stomped into the house. Danny loved summer. It was the perfect excuse to have a drink. Even on a Monday night.
His father soon returned with a bottle and plonked it down on the table.
“There you go, sir,” he joked. “Would you like to try it first?”
“No, I trust you.”
“Decent of you.”
They sat in silence for a while.
“What time’s Mum home?”
“She’s on the late and so’s Monica. I’m making fajitas for dinner. That okay?”
“Perfect. Then I’ll smash you on Mario Cart.”
Andy chuckled. “Fighting words that never come true.”
Danny couldn’t even argue. Andy always won. Until Lisa stepped up. She remained the undefeated champion in the Healy household.
“When did you know Mum was the one?”
Andy seemed taken aback at the direction the conversation was going.
“I…well…it’s going to sound really sad. I knew from the minute I met her.”
“Really?”
“She took a bit of persuading, mind,” Andy continued. He took a swig of his drink. “She told me if I took on her an amazing first date, she’d be mine.”
Danny hadn’t heard this story before. He frowned. “What did you do?”
Andy puffed up his chest. “I took her to see Prince. When I met her, she had a purple dress on. Seemed like fate.”
Lisa loved Prince. She had been inconsolable when he’d died.
