“I’ve been thinking,” Danny said, eventually.
“Oh yes?”
Was he about to be dumped? The shame of having to take a box of picnic items home to the flat would be almost too much to bear.
“Yeah. I think we should stop kidding ourselves.”
Here it comes.
“Kidding ourselves?” Tyler managed. “About what?”
Danny squeezed Tyler’s leg. “I think we both want this to be more than sex.”
Tyler nearly crashed the car into a supermarket delivery van. Instead, he swerved and managed to stop on the side of the road.
“What happened then?” Danny exclaimed.
“Repeat what you said.”
Danny swallowed hard. “Ignoring the fact you nearly killed us, I said that I think we want more from whatever this is. I know I do.”
Tyler stared into Danny’s eyes. “So do I.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
Danny visibly relaxed. “You’d better kiss me and seal the deal then.”
Blackdown Hill didn’t disappoint. The South Downs spread out below them like a verdant sea. The sun was high in the sky as they lay on the blanket.
“There’s no wind today,” Tyler said.
“It’s perfect.”
Danny pulled his vest over his head and threw it down. Tyler lay across from him.
“Fit as fuck,” he said.
Danny laughed. “Sorry, mate. Seems I’m taken.”
“He’s a lucky guy.”
Lying back, Danny sighed. “He certainly is. To be honest, I’mjust not sure he’s grateful enough for me. I’ll have to put it to the test later.”
“Hey, you.” Tyler grabbed an olive and threw it at him. It bounced off his chest.
“If I get ants, I’m coming over to your side.”
Tyler lay on his side, his belly full from all the food he’d managed to shovel in his mouth. Suddenly his phone began to ring.
“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” he said.
He heaved himself up and grabbed the ringing fiend. He frowned when he saw Deborah was calling.
“My sister,” he said to Danny. “What the hell does she want?”
He connected the call.
